rubbish, professionals should be adaptable to a situation, especially where they are going to lose money on a job

If that how you feel DON'T give quotes, give estimates, simples.

In 15 years I have NEVER upped the price after agree a price and starting.

If want to get a reputation for giving one price and charging another thats fine, but I ain't going to ruin my PROFESSIONAL reputation by doing it :001_smile:

If someone gives me a QUOTE I expect them to stick to it.

Have you ever given a discount if the job was done well under time?

Very occasionally and only a ever £20 or £30.

This IMO is one of the best forms of advertising, as it shows you are never out to just make every penny you can and they soon tell their friends.

Really? If someone was doing a job for me and they explained that it was more complicated than they thought and so was going to take longer I would let them charge me more. As long as they explained it to me and came at it with the right sort of attitude I wouldn't have a problem with that.

so....sometimes you get the quote wrong and misjudge the time involved but earlier in the thread you said:

With our work you can see exactly what is involved in the job, so as "professionals" we should give a price and stick to it.

How come you'll stick to the price when you've gone over-time on the job, but take money off if you complete the job under-time? be brave skyhuck, ask for more money if you need it, most people will understand especially if they found you through word of mouth, they already know your trustworthy right, why would you try to rip them off?

At the start of this thread it is made very clear that Tom cocked up.

The tree has not grown in size since the quote, it has not moved further from the nearest access.

In what way do our jobs become more complicated??:confused1:

If it takes longer than we expected that is down to our POOR JUDGMENT!! and is not the customers fault.

How can a customer get three quotes to compare prices if some are going to up the price once they have won the job and begun???

How would you feel if you put in a "proper" quote for a job, but are beaten by a cheaper quote, then once the winner begins the job he ups the price:sneaky2:

If this is acceptable why not just put in low quotes for all your jobs, so you win them all, then just up the price once you start???

Isn't it good practice to build in an allowance for unexpected problems when quoting/estimating? That way, if all goes well , you can give a discount if so inclined.
