Some one has to pay for all the other stuff involved in running a business and it's not just trucks, chippers, fuel, insurance, there are staff doing the work that is not invoiced, they need a wage.. payroll, quoting, accounts, filling in tenders, writing method statements, organising the diary... The teams out their doing the rel work have to bring in enough money to pay for all that..

this is the big problem with tree work ....the overheads ... most firms charge  say

£ 200 -£300  per man day +vat which seems a lot of money for a 3 man team to do some basic tree work , which a lot of it is ....simple felling , hedge topping trimming chipping etc .   Where as a plumber , plasterer etc have far lower overheads as part of their man day rate    and probably do not have endless bloody "tickets " to obtain just to do their job so as a consequence will keep more of what they charge ...

Does anybody on here earn £200 a day just for climbing???

Do mostly my own work but do the occasional day for other companies for £250 when they need and I'm not too busy.

Don't really need to do those days but it's nice to work with different people now and then and no stress for a couple days on someone else's job is cushty and good money. I do let them use my van for that as well but they rarely do.

Oh and I'm in Hertfordshire so jeffing expensive to rent/buy round here.

brickie 150

chippy 160

plumber 180

all less 20% CIS.

More in london, more expenses as well.

A good brickie on £150!?

My mates are on a big site in Norwich they're on £450/thousand £14/m on block work. On good straight runs they will be doing a damn sight more than £150/day, probably doubling it.

Nail on the head there. I am often envious of a tradesman who turns up in a transit compact with a few grands worth of power tools and charges £250-300 for a days worth of work. Then they drive home and park on their drive at no extra cost. An professional arb team might turn up with a 7.5t tipper and chipper and people baulk at you trying to charge £400.

But no one has a gun to our heads making us do it! So who's to blame I guess. As has been said, public perception of the 'value' of your job.

Bear in mind that the people charging £250 to turn up with a top handle and some string and the people who are happy to pay them that because they know they can put a £3000 tree on the floor with it aren't likely to be posting in these threads. They're probably on their yachts being attended to by gaggles of buxom chiropractors.

So that's where Dean Lofthouse and Bob are?
