Insurance for subbies

I'm sure I've read threads on this before but couldn't find it. Just wanting to get a little info on what insurance I might need as a subby climber. I've read (I think on here) that I would be covered under Employment Insurance by whoever is employing me at that time. I have been asked by some companies to provide my own, others don't appear to be bothered. Seems like it may be a bit of a grey area? Advice is much appreciated!

Apparently you don’t need it, according to my insurers.   each year on renewal they tell me I’m throwing my money away and that the policy would not pay out anyway

I was on the receiving end of a potential claim.  

 

I was told the same thing.  I cancelled it very quickly after that.

Subbie/freelance climber we are talking about, not a bonafide sub contractor

your employer will have employers liability, if he's not he's a naughty boy

Weird, I always assumed when I'm getting subbied in for other firms if I smash something it's on my insurance....does that meab subbies should be checking employers for correct insurance?

And this is where the confusion comes in. From what I've read here over the years most of the subbies in tree work aren't subbies, they are free lance climbers. As Rich Rules signature line states.
