20 years ago if you wanted a start in the industry, you had to get a job first. Not enroll in a Colledge course you could never fail.

If you were not up to the job,you were fired. There was no entering the job at Climber level. You started by dragging brush.

Contract Climbers used to be guys that had more abiliy than their full time Employer had difficult jobs.So they would go off and mainly do the bigger Trees for a number of Companies or smaller out fits. Now "Contract Climber " often means recent College graduate with more gear than the space program and both Arms covered in Tattoos show the "story of his life" all 22 years of it.

This isn't a thread about blokes banging on about how great they were or how much better things might have been in the days of Real Ale and Woodbines.

20 years ago you could do exactly that. (Take a college course without a job)

When I started 19 years ago I was 17 I had wanted to the job since was 12 I certainly wasn't made for it to big and fat but determined I court a bus 30 miles to meet my boss who i would work for while I did 1 week a month at college I got in his pickup that first morning and the first thing he said was I have had 7 of u students and they have all been crap if u are u will be off as well I lasted the year and still do contract to him now I have worked all over the world and love my job i wouldn't change my choice to be in this industry for anything I first thought trying to prussick up the first tree I tried to climb at college I won't ever be able to do it i was to heavy my instructor even said ur to big to climb trees polite for fat thankfully I didn't listen 4 years later I was running my own climbing crew in the USA for davey tree so all I can say is if people want to do it be prepared to suffer struggle and if u persistent u will enjoy the job hopefully as much as so many of us do
