Hmm, interesting must have a crack, put those wire coat hangers to good use...

Strange how it works for some

When you have bent the Handles of the rods put the handles through some small diameter pipe so they can swing freely.

OK, I see like a bearing so they can swing freely.

Thanks Eggs I'll give that a go & report back, there is supposed to be an underground stream across our lower field so be an opportunity to try & find it.

Yes, I heard it works for electric cables aswell

Hi Matt

Richard next door can do it fairly well. Couldn't track down our water pipe in the field and he marked it out within a few feet. Tried it myself under his direction and got some results but not so accurate. Not the foggiest how it works but very handy.

Is there a length ratio in the L shape that acts works best, for example how long should the long bit of the L be? Good tip putting the handles in pipe.

Not that I'm aware of. I've used manhole keys held gently when I've had nothing else to use.

I can do it, was shown how to do it by a plumber friend who uses it a lot, it's a very handy thing to be able to do.

I use a couple of gas welding rods bent at just under 90 degrees and sort of bend my wrists over slightly, if that makes sense, it helps the rods move easier.

Easy way to check if it works is to run a tap indoors and walk over a known drain in your garden with the rods in the plastic pipe, this way you have no influence over how the rods turn.
