BigJ,

£50K (ish), and whether that included the now sold  camper unit I am not sure,

BUT, unlike most other vehicles NOT subject to massive depreciation.

And considering the hours of loving labour invested, and all photo-documented seriously good value inmho.

I have recently trysted to buy a 1988 LWB re-engined with an OM605 and the 6 speed manual(but by an Irish Engineer, Gordon Lucas) as our next daily driver/lifetime keeper, since I have had a bellyfull of modern car electronics in the Skoda Octavia.

I will live with the sub 30 mpg, since now retired, we do few miles.

I was seriously looking at an LWB 460 re-engined with the legendary OM 606 and with a purely vacuum operated Automatic box, but it was a lot more money.

(starting at 37k Euros, recently reduced to 30k Euros and sensible offers invited, for a pre 1990 vehicle!)

Anyway we still got, and intend to keep our 290GD Automatic 1999 Steyr Puch van, which is booked in for a strip-down and  full body respray Jan next.

So did not really need a 2nd automatic, especially since wor daughter still prefers driving a manual?

Am I "G"rabbiting on a bit ?

If you've got two like for like trucks and one does 10mpg more, obviously that's going to be a consideration. 



I wouldn't get too hung up mpg.

Big J you seem to be willing to spend £'s, just import a 70 series and make us all jealous.

 

Although we might have to wait till Brexit as you have to export outside EU..

If I could justify one, I would buy in an instant. I imported a mazda bongo from Japan and it was 15 years old but still mint. I have wanted a 70 series for decades.. Every few years I check various web sites in different  countries and contemplate importing one.   But I don't need one..

Pickups are always juicy. My 1.3 diesel Corsa van pays for it's insurance cost each year just in fuel savings. Running costs are small and the flexibility and convenience of having multiple vehicles (five actually!) pays for that.

 

Big J, eventually you're going to just have to accept that you can't get a pickup that goes as fast with a trailer as it does without. Sounds like that would be dangerous anyway, in those 'narrow Devon lanes'...

Honestly mate, in your situation I'd get a small lorry or have a V8 jeep and leave it coupled to your trailer. That's what we do for transport. Has gas conversion so actually surprisingly cheap to run. Fleet policy means insurance is negligable and running costs are only as much as you use it.

 

It's the simplest way get 250HP+ in the UK.

It seems to be difficult to get the diesel Land Cruisers from Japan - they’ve all been petrol when I’ve looked.
