Hi all

Can anyone recommend a pick up with good pedigree.

First truck and don't wanna get new but looking around £5k

I'd be grateful for any other advice to help me know what characteristics I'm looking for in a good truck (engine size, single or twin, off road effectiveness etc)

Thanks in advance

Steve

For 5K or under go for the best Isuzu Rodeo or Hilux you can find, or if you want European, a Ford Ranger. I've had dozens of pickups, mostly Hilux but the 2004 Rodeo I currently have is easily the nicest thing I've driven, and one of the most economical- you can get a genuine 30mpg easily. They are also chain driven, no timing belt to snap and will do spaceship mileage. If you are going to be carrying a lot of gear and decide to go for a single cab, you will need a decent tool vault but then obviously you are going to sacrifice some of the load space you opted for with the single; doubles are a lot more practical if the truck is going to be used for anything ever, other than work and the single has so little cabin room they get a bit ridiculous if you have dogs, saws, kit bags and Christ knows what else.Deciding on which is the toughest call as a double cab load bed only takes at best 1.2 cube of wood- entirely depends on what you need to be doing with the truck?

I'm a big fan of the Rangers. You'll get a really tidy older model for that money and they're bomb proof.

If you have a lot of kit maybe look at the super cab. It will squeeze in passengers if you have to or have good space behind the seats for kit. The bed is about half way between a crew cab and a single. It's a good compromise if you think you will ever need to take extra bodies anywhere. If you only ever plan to take yourself and one staff member/the wife then a vault on the back is removable and gives better load space if you were to need it. It all comes down to people. Kit can go anywhere, passengers can't.

Agreed, I'd go for the Ranger [emoji106]

Forget the rest ...get a ranger and for £5k you should get a decent one...have had nothing but rangers since 2001 nothing comes close...have I been lucky? May be but you can't beat them...avoid Mitsubishi and Nissan,Isuzu on and Toyota over priced. You need to try a few before you buy.
