I'd be very careful if you're working with Aesculus we cleared one that had fallen in a pond and all the fish died.

Something called aesculin poisoned the lot in 24 hrs.

Bio oil, freely available.

You'll never kill a fish by throwing logs at them. I tried thousands of times in my youth with zero success.

Had the same problem with moth balls. Threw loads of them and never hit a moth.

Yes I know of people who have killed fish with chain oil forming a film over an adjacent pond.

Never heard of them being killed by vibrations though.

Smashing the ice on fishponds can damage the fish swim bladder with the vibrations that's why it's advised to have something floating to keep a clear space or put a warm pan on to melt a hole. Any oil on the top can't be good but mineral oil will probably be worse than veg oil.

This is exactly what we had to do one day last week, a birch above a fishpond, stipulated nothing must go into pond, so I sorted out some full length scaffold boards to take with us and a big tarp.

Worked out just right.

Thanks for the replys guys.

Its a pig of a job tbh.

It may be one i pass up on as i am crazy busy and the last thing i need is a headache of a pond full of big fish croaking it!

Cheers for the advise!

I was on my way to a job yesterday when I realised I had run out of chain oil, twenty miles to the nearest supplier so stopped at Tesco and bought a couple of litres of rapeseed oil, worked a treat, can it be used permanently or will long term use damage/clog the oiler system?

You can use it long term, no problem. Have been using it exclusively for several years, never any problem. Keep the saws and containers away from mice and rats though....I would suggest if you're going to convert to rapeseed that you flush out the chain oil tanks with white spirits or old petrol first to remove all traces of mineral oil. I don't know if this is actually necessary, but I would imagine that mineral and organic won't mix, and therefore there might be a film of mineral on the tubes, which might possible become a problem down the road....I really don't know, just went with my gut and haven't have any issues.
