one thing I should mention, when I converted mine to single lever operation It retained the option to stop the ram returning all the way, so in effect if you're splitting logs half the length of total ram travel you are effectively doubling the ram speed as you only need to return it halfway. I'm not sure if your current splitter has the same operating functions.
