  6. I think you're right, they can't request that. Being charitable, maybe it's not clear on the application if the tree has TPO - reality the application go to an admin person in planning department who knows nothing about trees. Theory I guess is reduce workload on TO but sometimes they say something daft.

Blackberries were crazy early this year in Kent. Sloes and Damsons fruited really well. Local vineyards started picking mid September, which is early. Acorn/conker crop is normal. Sweet chestnuts keeping their powder dry. ’Mast year’ talk is generally bollocks. We all wish for a cold, dry winter and a white Christmas, but it will invariably start to piss down in a couple of weeks and not stop till March.

  11. @Iain Hickinbottom Also in the context future safety. I'd be wary of advertising your mobile number on a public forum like this. You never know who's looking, and there's ways of tracing numbers to addresses in some cases I think. Better to just get people to PM you instead. Best of luck with the recovery.
  12. Thank you. I concede, they are undoubtedly two strong achievements, and much needed unfortunately. They're probably exceptions though, unless you can suggest anything else that he's done to benefit us, the average hardworking people, or the planet? It's a shame that Trump couldn't personally be a bit more assertive with his best friend Putin, rather than bringing him in from the cold with the red carpet treatment. What happened to the legions of screenshots, too high a CO2 footprint?
  13. Jebus indeed. I give up. Aside. I'm not a Starmer fan. I didn't vote for him. I can be honest and openly say that I don't think I can list any good things that he's done since Trump was elected a 2nd time. This discussion would be so much better if you had the decency to be equally as candid. Regarding the EU types, (why do people always have to be categorised as "types" or belonging to certain "sides"?), I have no idea. We're not part of the EU. For reference. There is a Venn diagram for the <not a fan of Trump> and <not a fan of Starmer> sets. Just saying.

Yes, I was very pleasantly surprised by the size of all the fruit, given the draught we had over the summer. The only exception was the Damsons, they were noticeably small than normal. I used to make a fair bit of cider, never thought to go to the next level. Nice idea.

In what regard has the distilling regulations been relaxed?

  20. Can the LPA insist on an arborists report for notification works in CA? I don't believe they can, but stand to be corrected. The old boy who I've worked for many times is in his 80s and had filled in the form himself. Went to the local council office (not planning portal) Anyhow, he's sunning himself in the Mediterranean and the LPA rang him saying the notification has been rejected as there was no arborists report! No mention that the trees weren't clearly identifiable etc. As far as I know, it's a case of TPO or no objection to the works. Thought please
  21. So sorry to read this, fella. There's nothing worse... Have you any photos of the stolen kit to put up ? -Also please think carefully, as you start to replace your kit, how you will successfully foil the almost inevitable nocturnal 'return visit' ? See recent thread on : 'Protecting my yard'

I've made cider for about 10 years now, about 200-250 litres. I've thought about trying distilling, especially now that regulations are more relaxed but quite honestly I have too many hobbies as it is. An alternative to distilling is freezing the cider and decanting the alcohol which of course does not freeze and separates out. The Canadians call this Apple Jack I think. Again, never tried it.

Yep, a bumper crop for all tree fruits here in the NW -though I was expecting less/smaller fruit, given the very dry summer period . Sweet Chestnuts gathered this week. Apple store and new freezer are chocca block. Evidevidently there was sufficient winter rainfall to make no difference to yields. Has anyone here ever experimented with making Calvados/distilling cider ? Just asking for a friend, obviously... 🤔
