I've dulled hedge trimmer blades on both, but for a woodland screen would choose hawthorn - my impression is they put on more growth in a season Scarlet Firethorn. Form: Rounded shrub. Lifespan: 25-50 years. Pyracantha can suffer from the diseases pyracantha scab and fireblight. It can also be attacked by pyracantha leaf-mining moth and woolly aphid pests.

I have more than once asked them to produce some Special 6 smocks for us in any Hi-Viz colour, but preferably orange. They eventually came back with “ if you send us your garments we can stitch reflective strips onto them for you”, completely missing the point, even though I had told them we worked in Forestry not highways. Considering the amount of garments they supply to search and rescue teams, you would think that HI-viz would be a standard option by now.

That's actually a very good question! ⭐️ It would work best with the more expensive 90/120cm high Hawthorn whips, or tall Pyracantha (in an urban setting).. Blackthorn is good too, but unless you include a root barrier along-side the planted hedge-line, then you'll tend to find a huge thicket soon forms from the root suckers, that spread everywhere.. I don't think I've ever seen or heard of anyone doing this.. We'll have to call that the ADD+ planting technique then, Alex?

I must have bought one of the last pairs of fellhunters and now that I want another pair I can't find them anywhere and the arbortec website doesn't list them anymore. I like the high leg and the soles have stood up to walking on a lot of sharp rock. I can't see any similar boots apart from spending big bucks on some Pfanners. Anything I'm missing ? Any recommendations? Anywhere still got size 8/42 fellhunters on the shelf ?

Some of the stems came out with practically no root at all. These were just trimmed to a single stick with no branch at all, then laid over ! There was a pleacher every 1-2' to try to give some hold to the hedge in the absence of sound established roots.

I actually did this once on a road widening situation where the land owner was adamant he wasn't going to lose his hedge to be replaced by an ugly chain link fence. The trees were dug out trying to keep some soil with each stem, though most didn't. Swung over to new placement and then laid, removing as much side growth as practical to balance the water requirement from the dramatically reduced root system. All this was done in very late spring, with full leaf, so the owner was told to water well, which to his credit he did daily for the whole summer. The whole hedge survived, not a single loss. Total length 80m. 20 years later you'd never know what had occurred.

I do rate a buffalo techlite for drizzly days. They stay comfy when damp. It's currently my most worn jacket unless it's wet rain.. I've asked them if they can make an orange one or atkeast orange on the shoulders/arms. And raise the side pockets above the harness for handwarming.. so far no response. I always feel daft wearing dark earthy colours for tree work

Morning all. Warmed up a bit here but the rain's battering the window now, sounds miserable. Given the weather and it's my last day of mini holiday I imagine I'll just go to the cafe, again. If I died today I expect a little brass plaque on the table in the corner! Been going to "the cafe" since I got my first job when leaving school, something like 35yrs. It was good, cheap food and the owners granddaughter worked the counter. She was fit, an unobtainable older woman (probably only 20!) with a little Audi, I knew she'd have no interest in me, a spotty kid on my step through Honda Melody sporting a convenient shopping basket on the front. All this time later and she's running the show, still the same family, still good food, still feels like home, she's still fit and i even know her name now. I'm playing the long game.
