The more I think about it the stranger it seems. Lockerbie, 270 victims, wasn't a mass victim event. Harold Shipman, 250 victims, wasn't a mass victim events. Titanic, 1500 victims, wasn't a mass victim event. HMS Hood, 1415 victims, wasn't a mass victim event. Manchester Arena Bombings, 23 victims, a mass victim event. It's bizarre.

The definition of a mass casualty event confuses me a bit I have to say. It appears the Manchester bombings were a mass casualty event only because all victims were taken to the same hospital that was overwhelmed in the moment. If the same amount of victims had been taken to three hospitals that didn't subsequently become overwhelmed it would not be classed as a mass casualty event, although it led to the same amount of casualties?

Thinking about the guessing weight by physically lifting stuff, it occurs to me I've got three categories. 1. That was easy, lift them all day. 2 That was ok but don't fancy lifting them all day. 3. F me, that's a Mark 'hernia' Bolam, I'll get a saw.

It's got a lot of worrying bits on it, the climber in it noticed a lot of included unions and a few bits welding together (that the right term?). It's an unusual one, hasn't gone very tall but very wide, and a lot of it is growing outward, then turns back into the canopy causing crossing branches everywhere. The property benefits from quite a lot of older trees and the owner is keen on them, this has given them a fright and they've asked to have a survey done now so at least they're keen to look after them.

My guess that won me the mackerel (yuck) was 1500kg. I base my guesstimate on what a timber crane will lift at full extension, half in or close in to the machine. Feels like I get a better handle on it from sitting in the machine thinking of its capability rather than lifting rounds myself. If I pick something up I've no idea how heavy it feels really, but knowing the machine's capacity helps judging a piece by it's size.

The weight was 1320kg according to the weighbridge As I've kept you waiting so long for the results I'm afraid the sardines have gone off. The new prize is what the office posted on the work WhatsApp group after the Copper Beech owner called them to say what an excellent job the tree fairies did for them, leaving no damage or mess. You'll have a better idea than me about that but I'd think so. Edit. Really not much left holding it up.

Couple of days ago we had a call out, "a bit of my tree is falling down onto the summerhouse, can you help?". A large Copper Beech limb, contorted lump with historical wounds that were severely compromised and the whole thing was cracking away at the trunk with the tips resting on the summerhouse. It took a bit of working out but with a control line on the butt (wraps in the tree), the Hobbs attached towards the tips and a tag line to steady it, we got it lifted, separated from the tree and turned 90 degrees to lay it down on a path. No damage to the summerhouse. So that was the challenge and it all went to plan, but once the chipping was done and we had the main limb on the ground, talk turned to the weight of it. Four of us on site, four very different guesses! Once the lump was cut up and loaded on a trailer it went back to base via a weighbridge and we established the winner. I was unimpressed with my prize of a tin of mackerel. If anyone wants to have a guess what the weight of it was, basically everything that didn't fit through an ST8 chipper went over the weighbridge, I'll reveal the load weight later...
