So I’ve just had a look at the Ash. It’s still standing but is a whopper! 9’ high, 5.5’ x 4.5’ wide. Must be about 4t in it. The rot pocket is quite small and does not seem to go anywhere. Also some pics of the logs he’s already cut up. But as it’s not dropped I’m not sure how to go about that? So any advice on how to safely get it on the deck would be greatly appreciated.

I only use wedges when I have to back out of the cut. Otherwise I really find I dont need them. And with a buggered back Im far from macho. But then I just have a baby mill that has a 600mm Cant. Its more effort turning an Oak Log than it is sliding the slabs off in my opinion.

So Ive dropped a fair number of trees on my plot. I muts have about 20 tons of mainly Spruce to Mill up, some a good 25-30". Plus I have a bunch of Cherry, Birch and Beech to Mill as well. So the plan this week is to build a Log Deck and also try my hand and timber framing, or at least getting to grips with a Chain Mortiser. Having a look at a few pics on-line Ive settled on something like the pic below. I'll incorporate a removable section so I can operate the Mill like in one of the pics. I have 10 x 3m lengths of 8" Pressure Treated Beams, so that kinda dictated my dimensions. So will be 3m x 3m. I dont really see any benefit of making it wider that 3m? I roughed out a a drawing. My thinking is to have a 250, or 300mm tennon on the legs that will anchor the cross brace and notched rails/beams. Its either a 250mm tennon onm the leg so the Rail is mortised 50% through the notch or 300mm tennon with the Rail thru mortised. Im not sure yet which path to go down? I want to be able to easily dismantle the Log Deck yet have it strong and rigid enough to support a fair few logs. Any advice/critique welcome. Oh and any idea how to cut a tennon 4" Square thast 250-300mm long?

Away to have a look at a large Ash Log the morn. Supposedly 6-7 foot diameter and 13 foot long. The guy who's tree it was needs it gone as its far to big for him to deal with. He has a Logosol M7 so knows a little about Milling and Id guess knows its diameter. He just wants a dry/dryish slab in exchange and I can mill it on site if I prefer. If he's accurate with the diameter Im not sure how I'll mill it? Ive only a 42" Alaskan and my Bandsaw that can take a 30" Log. Potentially I could rough cut it into quarters with my 36" Bar and 088 then get it on the Mill? He sent me this pic of the stuff he's already clogged up, so it looks fairly clean too.

How do you find buyers so fast? What and how do you charge per board?

Even a 48” chain is bad enough! I wonder if there is much extra teeth to sharpen on a chain that size of it’s a skip, or even a hyper skip chain? I use the Granberg precision sharpener when out with the Alaskan. Saves a lot of time if you hit metal. Almost to the point that it’s quicker and easier sharpening a 48” chain than removing the saw from the mill and changing the chain over for a fresh one.

Whilst I do agree it would have been great to have seen some clearance stoves from you guys when I was looking. I should have maybe asked had I thought of it.
