  1. So let me get this right.... They're wanting us to boycott Stihl because they're used in illegal logging?? Would the same be said if they were husky, mitox, dolmar, even Aldi cheapo saws??
  2. So a few of you have / do use a Shultz gun?? Good to know it's been tried and works...
  3. Guess I'm worrying over nowt then... That video posted somewhere round here, by chainsawbar.co.uk had me thinking I was 'missing' part of the tooth when filing. Guess not then.
  4. Ok, been reading / learning for a while now, (that's why I joined here), and now I'm confused over chain file sizes.... On our saw, we have a 24RMS chain, needing a 4.8mm - 3/16 file to sharpen it. I use a 3/16 file, but after reading the sharpening thread, it's still not doing a proper job, the file doesn't seem to 'fill and file' the whole tooth - only from what I can see the top half is filed...? So, is there much difference is size between 4.8mm and 3/16 file??
  5. And after seeing it at work on Countryfile, in a hope that it may help the fight against Ash die back too...
  6. Does it have to be a grab?? We built a hydraulic thumb for our 3tonner, and works just as well along with the 18in bucket as a full on grab for feeding our processor. Handles anything up to 2FEET!
  7. Why 'buy' teeth? Go see a farmer, surely they'll have old points off a plough or similar lying around (we do - a 45gal drum of them)... Then, get the 2 similar points, and weld them 'back to back' to make the wedge shape....
  8. We have a mountain of creosoting to do this year, and are looking for a faster / easier way to apply creosote.. A while ago (A few years), brushing took too long, so he tried the sprayer type applicator, but the creosote just 'ate' the sprayer. So this year, he's thinking of a 'Shultz Gun' kind of thing, metal with no moving parts, and all it needs is an air supply. Obviously, there maybe a mist etc to be wary of, but as usual we'll be booted, suited and masked using this stuff too. Thoughts...???
  9. Protein shakes.... Take one at lunch time, that one helps recover the morning's work. Then another when I'm finished, same as before - to recover from that work. Along with the protein, they usually have micro / macro nutrients to aid muscle recovery. And before anyone says, I ain't a body builder... PS's aren't just for body builders, I've heard they're being 'prescribed' by some doctors to the 'older' generation as they say as you get older, your body starts to struggle to absorb protein from normal food....
  10. Thanks. Wonder if the boss will listen now that it's confirmed IT'S ELM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And for the warning about the laburnum.
  11. 15 metres IMO, is still not enough distance fro the road.... The muck chucked up from the road will still travel. Along with pollution, eventually will suffocate the tree.
  12. I'll get better photos and post then when I'm home. But the dog's fine. He was chewing (destroying) a different bit of wood. Never seen him swallow any....
  13. Boss said oak to the second pic...
  14. Had these dumped over our wall last week, what is it?? Then what's this (in the second pic'), we think it's oak, but would like it confirmed? Tree surgeons said it destroyed 2 saws due to the trash seen in the middle. They didn't know this until cutting.
  15. After reading the reviews and opinions..... Think we'll stick with the 'borrowed' saw until something suitable comes along.... Cheers for the advice people.
  16. Also loaded cattle carcasses into bulk artic tipper at a slaughter house using loading shovel during the BSE 'fiasco' - the government over hyped it! Now that WASN'T a bad job - got half a pig at the end of it on top of wages. Did the drains and septic tank emptying too, the retiring old guy that showed me the job, showed me every trick to stay clean and stink free too. As said, bus driving was the worst, it was when you started to see 'no win - no fee'. So no matter how you drove, they claimed for anything. Cash cow on wheels buses are.
  17. Bus driver. Differences between the different companies?? The paint job on the vehicles! And then there's the general public... Worst species of animal to work with.
  18. Been to work this morning and looked at the 650 we're borrowing (hence the asking about getting our own), and it's a 22" bar NOT a 24" which I thought it was... Guess maybe a 20 or 22inch will suit us better....
  19. Currently use a 391 with an 18inch bar at work, and was thinking of getting something a bit bigger - something around 24inch, for when get caught out and a larger than usual chunk comes in, and to use as a 2nd saw. As it'll be the occasional / 2nd saw, we don't need to spend a fortune, so have been looking at the Mitox saws.... What they like? Reliability, parts - in general etc??? Thanks...
  20. How do / did you 'educate' customers to do that?? Tried to explain to boss to maybe try this but he wouldn't have it....
  21. We were warned about very narrow roads. But that was for Guernsey, so don't know if the same applies for Jersey. So vehicle choice maybe a factor - lots of reversing / giving way to other (smaller) vehicles maybe??
  22. Think boss has a weigh ticket from not long ago, think he said he was 350kgs...
