  1. I will double check but it seems like quite a few people on here are enrolled on a HCC course so can't be all bad anymore?
  2. Going to enroll in one of the HCC courses soon but unsure weather to go for the Diploma or the certificate course? The reason I want to do it is just to learn more about arboriculture. Hopefully it will help me with work but it isn't a major concern for work, more for personal learning. Ideally I'd do the full ABC/RFS course but I can't afford all the tickets to get the full qualification unfortunately so that's out of the equation. So, Diploma covers the following subjects... Lesson 1 – Tree Knowledge. Identification, a tree collection, tree age, street trees. Lesson 2 – Nursery Practices. Tree and shrub tendering, nursery stock-pricing. Lesson 3 – Tree establishment. Woodland design, urban soils, nutrition of trees and shrubs. Lesson 4 – The Tree’s Environment. Ecology. Vegetation analysis, trees and pollution. Lesson 5 – Design and Management of Woodlands. Contracts in arboriculture. Lesson 6 – Plant Health. Plant pathology including a directory of pests and diseases. Lesson 7 – Biology of Woody Plants. Plant science in arboriculture. Lesson 8 – Legislation and Arboriculture. Health and Safety. Hazard identification. Lesson 9 – Maintenance of Woody Plants. Arboriculture specifications. Lesson 10 – Miscellaneous. Autumn colour in sequence. Arboriculture associations. Certificate covers.... Lesson 1 – Amenity Woodland Lesson 2 – Formation and Properties of Soil Lesson 3 – Tree Nomenclature and Plant Selection Lesson 4 – Ill Health of Trees Lesson 5 – Plant Handling and Supply Lesson 6 – Shrub and Tree Pruning Lesson 7 – Tree Inspection and Surveys Lesson 8 – Tree Felling and Disposal Lesson 9 – Health, Safety and Legal Issues Lesson 10 – Maintaining Equipment Which do you think would be best for a general learner? I'm learning more towards the certificate over the Diploma. Cheers.
  3. Rivlin Valley Road, Sheffield. Conifer had snapped and was hanging in another tree right next to the main entrance into the park. Luckily as weather was rubbish they wasn't any kids around!
  4. Really!? Didn't know about the off side rule but I don't follow rugby either.
  5. Most smartphones are water and dust proof as standard nowdays. I have the Galaxy S7 and im pretty pleased with it. Does everything you'd expect from a smartphone and has 32gb memory built in.
  6. Like some others on here I just get a heavy duty case for my phone. Most modern smart phones are dust and water proof as standard and are built stronger then what they used to be. Ive currently got an i-blason case on my Galaxy s7 and I've had no issues with it so far. It's been dropped screen down on a tile floor, dropped numerous times in general day to day use and even dropped it in a muddy puddle the other day whilst out mountain biking with no Marks on the phone or the case! 7. Why is the type of work in the OP bad for the tree? What makes cutting the limbs the way they are dangerous for future climbers? I'm not a tree surgeon so just curious?
  8. Maybe when the work load isn't so hectic your boss will let you do the smaller climbing jobs? Right now if you have a lot of work on and your boss needs them doing asap the subby is the better option for him. Just keep reminding your boss that you want to get more experience as a climber every few weeks and see what happens when the work load isnt so demanding.
  9. Looking for some advice please people. I'm looking to move from my current work and into arbs but how much per hour would you expect and groundie, with limited experience, to earn? I'm 26, currently working in grounds maintenance, have CS 30, 31 and Woodchipper licence aswell as PA 1, PA6, EFAAW and others (see signature) I want to learn not just the how's of the job but the why's too. Why does this tree need taking down? Why doesn't that tree need any work? Why would it be best to pollard that tree etc. Ideally I'd start as an apprentice but I can not physically afford to drop from my current wage (£10 ph) onto an apprentice wage and I can't see many arb firms wanting to take on a trainee and pay him full groundsman wage! Another option I have been looking at is doing one of the HCC courses from home to give me a bit of knowledge but this doesn't help with the practical side of the job. I need to contact local arb firms again to see if they have any weekend work I could help with and been looking to volunteer to gain some experience but no luck as of yet. Any advice you may have if greatfully welcome, Cheers.
  10. I want to get some more experience in arb work and thinking of volunteering somewhere. I've had a look on the forestry commission website but can't find anything close to me. I've also tried all the local arb firms but nobody has anything (going to try again as it has been a few months) Also looked at groups such as PPCV (Peak park conservation volunteers) and the like but no luck. Is there anywhere else people could think off that I may be able to get experience from? Thanks.
  11. Agree, can understand why people want tough phones but a smartphone with a protective case on is just as good imo!
  12. Your not mental just lucky that your hobby is also your job!
  13. Nice video, would have ended it around the chipping timing though.
  14. I would be extremely happy with just the 2
  15. Is Narrow boat having all four or is there still a couple spare? Cheers
  16. I've got an s5 in a spigen case. Dropped it multiple times and only time I've damaged it was when I was going down a slide and it fell out of my pocket without the case on and the screen cracked. Still plenty use able mind!!
  17. Arbtrader or gumtree fir selling stuff definitely.
  18. Nokia 3310 used to be a though little phone
  19. Why not just get a good protective case for your current phone? Plenty of good solid cases made now, check out Spigen.
  20. Would much rather have a Monday off then a Friday in normal circumstances, it been a 4 day weekend is even better!
  21. Yeah no problem mate, will let you know if I find anything.
