Yes, 3 had cheaper quotes, 2 got someone else (I didn't press for a reason) & the other didn't bother having the job done.

I'd not chased any quotes before but having read this, thought I'd give it a go & called the last half dozen & guess what...not a single one. Ho hum. Had an odd one today when a private householder asked to see our insurances, waste carrier permit, proof of qualifications etc. Didn't really mind, just took me aback. Oh yes, he asked to see our 'council licence' too, whatever that is.

Noticed a load of purple/browny colour bird muck over the Disco bonnet but was a bit slow to scrape/wash it off. 5 days later & theres several large, coin sized silver spots where the paint is down to ally. Glad I never bought that newer one.

Feeling a bit sick after an £80 bill to sort an 18 month old MS 362 which wouldn't hot start. Carb clean/new plug (routine I know), fuel pump diaphram & starter solenoid were the causes. Before the faults showed we'd been happy & bought another as back up, which is still under warranty. That, after 5 months developed the same symptoms so went back to another dealer for which we have yet to hear what is wrong. Being without a ground saw I bought a new 441 & blow me, after just 2 weeks it wouldn't run more than 5 seconds. Turns out it needs a control unit which is on back order. Luckily have the original back but am I being unreasonable to expect more? Might start buying 2nd hand if these latest are so fragile. Bought Stihl as not had a problem with their stuff before.

Just used a High Street broker who found one of the cheapest, told them when we fitted front towbar, had an extra driver added then had it signwritten, all for no extra. Strange how some seem satisfied so long as you tell them re mods.

Not sure where this belongs so feel free to move it...I was recently sent a copy of an article in some local rag & it seems that Second Chance Animal Rescue have a place in Orpington where they need 'loads of woodchip'. Its outside our usual area of work & theres no address but shouldn't be hard to track down if you're local.

Same machine (quadchip 160) but different query. Do they all leave a pile of fine woodchip/dust about a foot high, on the ground beneath the flywheel box? Had the 1st service recently & nothing was found wrong & I've gotten used to it anyway, but just wondered...

We did this being new to this work so had no reputation at all & seemed a good way to get known. The outlay was about £800 which, they say, you can have refunded after a year if that cost isn't covered. Prob about 30-40% of our new work is thru them & if not, other new customers like to look at references. Like all things its open to abuse as we know one or two who hand out reference cards to mates who give them 10/10. If they can't earn a good rep, the customers will soon rumble them. When renewal time comes we'll see...but probably will. Theres plenty of others now but CaT seems the most known.

Well thats different. Nowhere near as exciting but last year we went to Normandy as I'm keen on WW2 history. Going back this year with a large (13, I think) family group. Must say it was strange laying on the landing beaches thinking how it was 75 yrs ago.

Around Xmas was pretty lean so joined Checkatrade, to see what happened & initially got some work thru them but things improved more once the truck & van were sign written. I reckon even if new customers don't get you thru CaT, some'll still have a look at reputation/references there.

Not complaining but the blooming phone is ringing off the hook lately. This normal once the sap rises & buds show? Either that or we're too cheap.

Got pulled over yesterday while probably:laugh1: overloaded travelling the short distance to tipsite after a particularly hard day. Expected the works... diesel dipping, serial no checks on saws etc but no, was just the LA checking for waste carrier permits. Friendly enough & just doing their jobs but didn't realise that they (VOSA?) can now carry portable scales to weigh the truck.

Ours '05 transit has an extra high & half roofed (for use as hedge platform) arb body by TGS. We got the whole thing 2nd hand but as said, the build quality etc is v good & we'll have another when needed.

We also have to hire when grinding so are more exy than others who have their own. We do however, always tell that to the customer. Mostly we still get the job as I guess by then they 'know' us but there's no hard feelings at all if they go with the cheaper option. -
Great work Ian. Not sure re the 180 degs but I was told by an expert that their eyeballs are cigar shaped & almost reach the back of their skull so they'd need to be able to check behind? Anyway...looks good to me.

Thanks for that. This stuff is called Meyers I think & if it reduces friction as much as seems in other petrol/diesel engines it just me a stiffy, I meant...makes me feel good.

A trusted garage owner/friend had been really blown away when he tried to destroy a petrol engine after using it & asked me to try some in the TD5 eng, gear/transfer boxes & diffs. The reduction in noise & hopefully friction impressed me enough to put some in the other vehicles we use so I thought as the 160 has just been serviced, it'd do no harm to use it there too.
