  1. I remember seeing the demo of one of the kits when I was in London. It looked a bit fragile and I remember them trying to push it over some slightly uneven grass area. They eventually said that it couldn't pick anything up due to the ground changes. The second time I saw one, was also in London on a development site. They were using it to prove tree roots were running along the pavement and not into the development site. I think it took several months for them to submit the data, and due to the made up ground and previous development works the results were inconclusive. They ended up submitting an air spade report to show that roots were within the development site. Don't get me wrong I'm sure there have been changes over the years, and you see them being used by other street works to detect pipes etc, I'm just not sold on the idea that it will pick up all the roots and the location of them.
  2. It all depends on the thickness of the steel, how much was used, the supports etc. If its a retro fit then it'll be hard to estimate the weight. The best way would be to take it to a public weigh bridge (as the comment above).
  3. Red routes are all managed by TFL (see link from JaySmith). You will need to speak to them first otherwise the vehicle and chipper will disappear. If you do go through TFL then there will be a cost. Not sure about single lines, but I do know the double lines are considered as Motorways in the eyes of TFL, therefore you will need the big cones, signs, diversions etc. It all adds up to a small fortune!!
  4. This gives a bit more information, I do not know if it will help in your case though and you will need to look further into it. Talacre Gardens saved ? People?s garden given Town Green status | Camden New Journal But good luck if it does work!
  5. Is it the Town Council, District Council or County that have sold off the land? The 'Council' will not have brought the land but they will have held it in trust and therefore able to sell it off if they wish. Most Councils will have a policy of not selling public land or land that is for parks. However, a lot will get around it by offering the land to the developer and as part of the planning a new park will be developed. It usually works out that the park is less adequate and useful than the one before, but at least they can show joe bloggs that they have built houses and kept the park!! The fact that the area is in a CA will mean that the developers will have to think more about the design of the buildings to keep them in keeping with the area. If the Cherry trees are worthy of protection then you can press the local councillors etc to get them protected. It wont make much difference in the end, but it help to create problems. I do know of some local residents in London which changed a park to a common green (I think). That decision is made by the high courts and will require Councillors to be behind you to push it forwards. That then stops development, but it is a very narrow remit (i.e. needs to be open to the public, fenced around the site etc). Camden Letters: Talacre Gardens | Town Green | Open Space | Protection
  6. Its unlikely for the photos attached that the LA would take this case up as a HH. Although there are evergreen trees, they are spaced out and the main issue is the deciduous Poplars growing up behind. As stated in much better link above, it'll be a neighbour dispute. Personally I would have a very close look at the wall (assuming it is your clients wall) and any outbuilding or house near to the trees. Just see if there are any cracks, movement etc. Otherwise you maybe able to put the owners of the trees on notice but until damage occurs there is no legal requirement to carryout works.
  7. That'll be a good amount of woodchip or logs in the back then! I remember overloading a 7.5 in the past then having a local police car follow me for about 1/2 mile! was very happy to see them turn off on to another road
  8. From the photos and a little bit of second guessing I can see an Oak tree with the central leader removed sometime in the past. Tarmac around the base of the tree, also there is no flairing from the tree so likely build up of levels sometime ago. Ganoderma growing out from the main stem, branches over the bin storage area and main gates to the building (more of a guess). Also is that a salt bin in the back of the photo? Given that its close to the road with so many defects there are two options, reduce the tree and return each year to remove deadwood and safety check, this will be a huge cost and untimely you are just managing its decline. Or remove the tree now, increase the planting space and plant a new Oak tree. I would suggest placing the rubberised material over the tree pit so more of the space can be used.
  9. Done as well, hope the course is good for you.
  10. Looks really nice, have you put it over a weight bridge yet to see how much chip you can put in the back? I'm currently purchasing a transit and a chip box to the rear, its all main dealer so unfortunately it wont ever be ideal!!!
  11. That's a simple case of fly-tipping, love people who think well its over the fence so its not my problem! The Local Authority will be able to help you out. Fly-tipping is dealt through the Environmental Officers. Explain you have an issue and that you think it if from the property, take a photo of it as well. I would also find out when the gardener goes, then next time it comes over, pop your head over the fence. That usually works as well!
  12. We have a new(ish) Timberwolf 190, at around 170 hrs (and about a year old). We noticed that there is a leak from the fuel tank underneath for the last few months. Its not a big leak but in the morning you can see the tank base is wet and a pool of diesel underneath. We have had it serviced not so long ago and they said it was an issue with the tank and the connectors vibrating and then leaking. They said they can change it but it'll be the same parts and as such will start to leak again. Just seeing if others are having the same issue, or what they have done to stop it. cheers
  13. A lot of Councils will have term contractors or preferred contractors. In both cases, they will have sent out tenders to interested parties and then evaluated them against costs, ability, references, turnover and being approved contractors by the AA. I'm not sure how big your company is, or how well you can carryout the works. Most Councils will want to see 3 years of turnover (in profit), and then depending on the size of the contract will depend on the threshold (ie £250,000; £500,000 or £1m turnover per year). In your case with one little bit of work needing doing, I would speak to the TO and say as a local tree surgeon and resident I have noticed that the trees need doing in this area. Would you have an issue if we helped to set up a working day with local residents etc. Then pass over your details, insurance etc. Although you wont get paid, you will have a day of promoting your company and showing the Council what you can do.
  14. I use the LAVAZZA Rosa at home, find it smoother for a morning espresso. I went to an independent coffee shop at the weekend, had an espresso there. It was rich, dark, heavy with a taste of liquorice. Was lovely so will be going there again!
  15. Other part, I have just looked at your website. You don't offer any arb work but you do say you are a climber. I would certainly look at including that on the web site so that you can do more.
  16. Depends on where you want to go in the future. By the sounds of it, you are probably looking more towards commercial contract work (risk assessments, ISO etc). The best thing would be to speak with the AA and see what else you will need to do to get on the approved contractor list. This is a long process but it sounds like you have made a start at it so that's all good. You will need CHAS, Constructionline etc if you want to look more on the building sites, and you may also need to think about moving out of your normal area as well. Have you thought about linking up with a Tree Consultant so you can offer more services?
  17. The only route you would have is proving that the tree is causing damage to the wall (actionable nuisance and the LA would have to consider that). Apart from that, there's no right to light. Birds are migrant and may roost somewhere else next year. Once the leaves have fallen from the tree, its not the tree owners responsibility. I have seen hundreds of these letters, and most LA's will have policies that they will direct you to. Also they are unlikely to go with the idea of felling a large (I'm guessing its large) street tree with high amenity and public value. With a replacement (guessing a small tree) in the neighbours back garden! It'll take years before anyone sees it and wont have the same public value as a street tree.
  18. I give you a call if you do inspections as ours all needs doing now.
  19. Yes it is annoying that the PP is not joined to LA processes but I guess that would just be such a massive job it just wont be workable. Some LA's will list them as part of the planning process, and some don't. Just look on the web sites and see if they are listed. I know the EU and GOV are pushing for more and more on line so I know it will happen in the end.
  20. If its on or near to the SAM you would need to speak to English Heritage, you would need permission for works from the government! you need to speak to a regional advisor.
  21. I have liked yours if you can do the same, cheers https://www.facebook.com/Apexenvironmantalltd
  22. What area of the country are you in? I know there are a few nurseries in Kent that do pear trees. How different do you want them? and how far are you willing to travel to pick them up/pay for delivery?
  23. It all depends on you, and the reasons for thinking about moving into an employee status. In general the pros are: set working time paid holiday entitlement paid sick leave (Possible pension) input into ni less stress over where the next job is no paperwork/accounts etc possibility of working with others regular pay Cons: You have to report to someone else You don't get a chance to decide how you do things If you do well you wont always get all the rewards I have seen people move both ways, the ones that don't make are the one that haven't planned it out in the first place. It sounds like you are weighing up both sides so what ever you choose, you will know it'll be right for you and how it will change your life. As for experience or being self employed for so long. No it wont matter at all, most should see it as a positive. Clearly you have shown drive, experience, self motivation, dealing with clients to a professional level, a wide range of skills etc. Depending on you own skills and experience would you be looking at the same role or working as a supervisor etc?
  24. Personally I would also say its not only the number of people on the books, its also the quality of the work staff, ethics of the company, how they treat the clients (of both large contracts and the person who has the tree in the back garden). Do they pay on time etc. When you start looking at the whole picture then I would have to say the small to medium sized companies that are the best and probably represent the biggest segment. All the big infrastructure companies are buying up big contracts to run all services, that way is one service fails the others will help to prop it up. I don't like they way it is going, as big companies will buy out small tree teams and run them down on costs. Personally I always see that its hard to be a big tree company as there are high over heads and little returns (compared to other large contracts). The likes of Amey come in with a view that the tree climber can climb a tree one day and use a mower the other day. This means they reduce the quality of the tree surgeons expertise and reduce their pay to fit it in with their models.
