  1. Interesting subject. As some of you know our tree teams are crewed entirely with recovering drug addicts. This presents unique challenges as an employer...as you can imagine. Guys enter our programme to turn their backs on destructive lifestyles. Teaching practical skills is one thing, we put our guys through cs30/31 when they have been with us a while then we will look to send them on further climbing courses etc... Teaching guys a good work ethic and a responsible attitude can take a lot longer... Employers can use incentives and disciplinary procedures to help modify employees behaviour at work but to change someone's heart attitude is a different ball game altogether...
  2. We're also going to alter how the chipper sits on the 3 point link so it rides higher when not in use...
  3. We did look at the possibility of a TP chipper from AV (where the mog came from). While we were deciding the green mech became available for a really excellent price it does look a bit on the long side (worse in the photos) but the mog copes really well and it's performance is incredible.. It's really helped our business to grow. Thanks. Timon
  4. Nice one Steve , that's helpful mate...takes us ages to clean up!
  5. And a bit low as well! it's a work in progress...... Performs fantastic though. Out performs the chip box!
  6. Thanks.
  7. HM, No worries.... Sounds like it's right up our street..... Timon
  8. Hi HM, We are based in Worcestershire and would be happy to quote for the job. Did you get the PM I sent you with contact details? Thanks, Timon
  9. Best move we ever made was getting a Mog and Pto chipper. We still run an LDV with a 150 timberwolf but it's a toy in comparison..... And so far this year we've spent more maintaining the LDV than the mog...,,,!! Next move is a bespoke chip box...and possibly front mount the chipper so we can get a crane and trailer at the back..
  10. Agreed, we've tried loads of different handsaws and we always come back to either the 300mm gomtaro or the 330mm natananko. Used with a sawpod nothing comes close.....
  11. Hi mate, We've got two teams that work out of south BHAM ( I'm on holiday for the next fortnight ) I'll PM you a number to phone we might be able to work something out. Thanks, Timon

    the demon booze

I'm still here.... ( well , on hols in sunny Spain ) that would have never happened if I was still drinking etc...
  13. Just bought a new vertex vent helmet... Sick of replacing ear defenders on my kask. Gave the kask to one of our groundies, he's well chuffed. Loved the quality of the kask but couldn't live with the hassle. Anyone else had the same problem?
  14. I asked A supplier if they could find the best (cheapish but reasonable quality) safety glasses for us... Couple of days later they arrived. 3M black tinted wraparound safety glasses complete with: Soft case (good for polishing lenses) Semi hard case with belt clip Small lanyard thingy to hang them round neck when not in use.. I've had them over 12 months and they have had some right stick. Still going strong and all for about £10
  15. Is there going to be an ARBTALK stand at APF?? Or somewhere to meet up?
  16. Some trousers Zig zag or Spiderjack Rope Pulleys Caribiners Would love to have the funds for a new grinder but we've already spent big this year.... I'd be here all night if I wrote a wish list.....
  17. Many thanks for your input guys... Still think it's going to be a tough choice...., going to APF on the Friday so might get a chance to check them out there.... Timon
  18. Thanks for this.... Do you think that time spent on a ZZ would prepare me for a SJ? Bearing in mind I've only been climbing for about 12 months. I'm enjoying the HC right now having progressed from Blake's to prussic to HC...
  19. Can you tend slack one handed with the zz? And is the SJ the same in that respect? The guy I buy my kit off advised me against the SJ due to its "free fall" characteristics. Bit scary in a work environment. He then advised me to get a ZZ. Currently on a HC with an eye tie hitch.
  20. Hi RB Stickiest I've been is Scott's pine dismantle I was stuck like glue, had to use a spare prussic just to get down... 2 cycles in the wash and it was sorted. If it's really bad I wonder if naphtha thinners would work without spoiling the ropes, it's what French polishers use to thin out shellac which I believe is made from tree resin??? Just a thought... Not sure if it would harm your ropes tho? Timon

  22. We invest a lot of resources in advertising... This brings in a lot of enquiries so not every job is a climb or large. We do a lot of hedges. Small trees etc.. as well as bigger stuff. Smaller jobs seem to be the most profitable if we can squeeze 3 or 4 in a day. That's when being efficient really pays off. Same as everyone.. some days are better than others and I don't mind admitting, we've made our fair share of costly mistakes. But that's how we've learned a lot of stuff... The hard way It is sad when you think about all the "so called" firms out there devaluing the market working for pittance only to be out of the game months later when they find they can't sustain their business 'cos they aren't earning enough.
  23. Similar thing when I do quotes... I tend to give the price I can afford to do the job for and if they jump at it I'll then mention VAT. That's when the haggling usually starts, but at least it still leaves some sweetness in the price for both parties. If they baulk at the first price I explain that qualifications, insurance and work carried out to a good standard don't come cheaply. We're not short of work and being a charitable business people like the fact that as well as getting a reasonable price they're money is going to a good cause. We're doing about 45 quotes a week at the moment and probably landing about 60-70% of them.
  24. Ha, is that inc. VAT??
