    the demon booze

I'm still here.... ( well , on hols in sunny Spain ) that would have never happened if I was still drinking etc...
  2. Just bought a new vertex vent helmet... Sick of replacing ear defenders on my kask. Gave the kask to one of our groundies, he's well chuffed. Loved the quality of the kask but couldn't live with the hassle. Anyone else had the same problem?
  3. Is there going to be an ARBTALK stand at APF?? Or somewhere to meet up?
  4. Some trousers Zig zag or Spiderjack Rope Pulleys Caribiners Would love to have the funds for a new grinder but we've already spent big this year.... I'd be here all night if I wrote a wish list.....
  5. Many thanks for your input guys... Still think it's going to be a tough choice...., going to APF on the Friday so might get a chance to check them out there.... Timon
  6. Thanks for this.... Do you think that time spent on a ZZ would prepare me for a SJ? Bearing in mind I've only been climbing for about 12 months. I'm enjoying the HC right now having progressed from Blake's to prussic to HC...
  7. Can you tend slack one handed with the zz? And is the SJ the same in that respect? The guy I buy my kit off advised me against the SJ due to its "free fall" characteristics. Bit scary in a work environment. He then advised me to get a ZZ. Currently on a HC with an eye tie hitch.
  8. Hi RB Stickiest I've been is Scott's pine dismantle I was stuck like glue, had to use a spare prussic just to get down... 2 cycles in the wash and it was sorted. If it's really bad I wonder if naphtha thinners would work without spoiling the ropes, it's what French polishers use to thin out shellac which I believe is made from tree resin??? Just a thought... Not sure if it would harm your ropes tho? Timon

  10. We invest a lot of resources in advertising... This brings in a lot of enquiries so not every job is a climb or large. We do a lot of hedges. Small trees etc.. as well as bigger stuff. Smaller jobs seem to be the most profitable if we can squeeze 3 or 4 in a day. That's when being efficient really pays off. Same as everyone.. some days are better than others and I don't mind admitting, we've made our fair share of costly mistakes. But that's how we've learned a lot of stuff... The hard way It is sad when you think about all the "so called" firms out there devaluing the market working for pittance only to be out of the game months later when they find they can't sustain their business 'cos they aren't earning enough.
  11. Similar thing when I do quotes... I tend to give the price I can afford to do the job for and if they jump at it I'll then mention VAT. That's when the haggling usually starts, but at least it still leaves some sweetness in the price for both parties. If they baulk at the first price I explain that qualifications, insurance and work carried out to a good standard don't come cheaply. We're not short of work and being a charitable business people like the fact that as well as getting a reasonable price they're money is going to a good cause. We're doing about 45 quotes a week at the moment and probably landing about 60-70% of them.
  12. Ha, is that inc. VAT??
  13. Skyhuck, Totally agree with you. Have had some recent potential customers get back to me and tell me how much my quote was beaten by, in some cases I can't see how they can make anything out of the jobs they do so cheaply... And these crews are qualified with chippers etc... Not just cowboys. I know some guys are really quick and skilful able to turn jobs round quickly but I would have thought anyone that quick would expect to be on a decent rate not squeezing the life out of every quote. Thanks, Timon .
  14. Just walked away from 2 x 60ft conifers where someone had gone round the stems with a circular saw about 4 years ago... Not in the best of health to say the least.. Didn't think it was worth the risk and the owner didn't want to pay much..
  15. Hi Steve , Here's some pics.... I'm away after next week so if you want to sort the pallet out this week that will be cool.. Otherwise I'll be back mid September . I've got pallets and shrink wrap etc and I think I've got some pva. I'll PM you my number.. Timon
  16. Will sort through it and send you some pics of what is there... Thanks
  17. Hi Steve, The main trunk of the tree where I felled it near the base had some rot through it. Some of the stems had rot but there is a fair bit of 4" - 10" diameter stuff that seems good. Didn't get a chance to go through it all thoroughly cos of time.. I did take a couple of photos on my phone... Below.. I could try ringing up the trunk a bit to see how far the rot goes. There is certainly a pallet full of good stuff anyway. Thanks Timon
  18. Hi Steve . Cracking set up there mate.. Envious of your crane and trailer!! Timon
  19. A prussic (or the thimble borrowed of the lanyard) holding the pinto on the main line above the HC with the trailing part of the rope sent back up and over the pinto creating mechanical advantage. Hope I've explained correctly Thanks Timon
  20. Yeah it is. I like the extra bits on it so it can be reversed or used as second anchor etc... Only had one small climb on it . Just ordered a pinto to put above my HC to create some mechanical advantage.... I'm 49 tomorrow and would like to lose a stone in weight I'm hoping that this won't over complicate my system.. Thanks Timon
  21. Thanks! I bought it after seeing if on you tube Just wondered if anyone had any feedback? Nice one..,. Timon
  22. Quick answer: YES. We had all our kit LOLER'ed on Monday and were in a similar situation. Kit that we'd inherited etc... The inspector will assess every bit of kit and either pass it or fail it . Thanks Timon
  23. Just bought one of these and a pulley to use above my hitch climber. I like the idea of mechanical advantage and I'm keen to give it a shot... Does anyone use this set up and have any advice/tips ? Switched to HC a while ago and really like it. Currently using it with an eyetie hitch.
