  1. The tree is still living and I didn't see any obvious decay. It's coming down due to landscaping work. Thanks.
  2. Main stem about 8' It will be difficult for us to keep if that length ... No mechanical handling Thanks
  3. We're taking one down on the 1st August. In Birmingham . Quite a good size.. Think the main stem is about 18" diameter.
  4. From what I've read on this thread I don't fancy getting involved in commercial stuff... The cost of advertising is greater but it's rare that you get bumped doing domestic stuff. Fair play to you guys that navigate those waters .....
  5. Hi 10 bears, Just wanted something to help me with work... Species I.D.... Entry level science... Etc.. Thanks, Ti
  6. Thanks guys.
  7. Can anyone recommend some good books on trees? The science aspect. How it grows? Diseases... Fungi... Etc.. Many thanks Ti
  8. We're in W.Mids so I think there is a lot more competition than Pembrokeshshire. I've worked out what we can charge through trial and error. Winter was booked solid but we only had one truck then. It will be interesting to see how it goes this year. Guys who come to us stay anywhere between 1 hour or decades in some cases. We recommend 12 to 18 months. Some catch hold of the vision and stick around to help build the work and help others to change their lives. I've been with Betel for 8 years now.. It all comes down to how serious the guys are about changing their lives
  9. Hi shires, I aim between £450-£650 for a three man team. That seems to be the going rate round here. Any less we don't cover our costs... Our operation costs are astronomical, Large residential centres. Fleets of vehicles.. Equipment...Heat, light. Insurance. Communications...etc..etc..etc
  10. No our admin dept prints all of our invoices. I hand write the initial quote and give the customer the printed one on completion. Entry to betel is free of charge and residents work in our charitable businesses for free to help pay for their recovery. I came to Betel 8 years ago in a mess and decided to stay and help build the project. Best move I ever made Doubtful that we would ever get into utility side of things. Domestic work suits us best. As far as arb approved goes we just want to be working to good industry standard. Thanks
  11. Our tree firm is a charitable business that provides work and training for recovering addicts. All the proceeds go to provide the finance to run our residential recovery centres. We receive no government or statutory funding and residents don't collect any benefits. We also have landscaping teams and furniture restoration/retail businesses. The tree business in its present form has been going for the last two years. This year we acquired the unimog as a second truck. And two of us passed our 38/39. The others have their 30/31 tickets. We are committed to pursuing excellence in the industry and hope to become arb approved contractors in the not too distant future. Thanks for your interest and encouragement . Timon
  12. Thanks!!
  13. Thanks Steve, Truth is we're building on the foundations that others have laid. Been doing trees for 5 years off and on but climbing 6mths. Thanks for the encouragement. What's more incredible is the fact that both of our teams are manned exclusively by ex-addicts (totally clean) our customers love the fact that the proceeds go to help those in need of a second chance in life. Thanks for a great forum!!! Timon
  14. Nice one 5shires! I ended up doing 10 in the end and landed 6! All in all a reasonable day Got another 10 tomorrow ..... Would much rather be in the trees but.. No quotes no trees!!
  15. Hi Sean, Thanks for this.... Both cavities are in the main stem quite low down. What about a heavy pollard to rebalance? Thanks for your help mate! Timon
  16. Pics of the willow...
  17. Just looked at this willow. Where previous limbs have been removed large cavities have formed and there is fungi in there. (See pics) The bark is very soft around the cavities. Customer wants to save the tree. On the lower cavity the decay has reached to about 40% of the stem. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks
  18. I'll be going to look at 12 potential jobs today in the Birmingham area today. Some smallish jobs I:e hedges etc.. Some large jobs, dismantles and big conifer removals. I have to try and keep two x 3 man teams going which we seem to manage. I'm hoping to have a good day and hoping I get my prices right. I'm not an expert at species etc..and only been climbing 6 months. (Hence the "new guy" tag) so I look at the job as a whole... Access, time it will take, how much to remove etc.. It's a fine balancing act remaining competitive but wanting to build value into our business and not undermine the going rate for qualified tree teams.
  19. FLAT bar type flails that should read.
  20. Hi Rob We had a scagg 36" flail mower it had the fat bar type flails on it so it mulched what it was cutting. Little or no raking up afterwards.Walk behind 16hp. Wheels were driven by hydraulic pumps. It would fly through chest high brambles etc.. But also cut grass to an acceptable level and even leave stripes. Probably the most versatile mowing machine there is. IMO. Thanks, Ti
  21. Yes....... Quite new to climbing as well, but getting faster and better all the time. Just blitzed a job in 3 hrs I thought would have taken all day. Last week we did a big conifer job that took 2 days longer to finish than we expected. Be encouraged!! You have to start somewhere. As a team we learned more from the job we got wrong than from the one we did quick. All the best mate Ti
  22. Hi Paul We're coming to the Winchester one End of September. Thanks Timon
  23. Hi Paul , We're definitely up for it. Great idea. Thanks Timon (Betel)
  24. My wife and I have just read this post and are hurting with you mate.... We suffered our second miscarriage two weeks ago and are trying to pick up the pieces of our lives. At 49 and 48 years old it's unlikely we'll get pregnant again. We have no other kids. The one thing that gives us hope is that we will one day be reunited with our loved ones(even the the little ones we've yet to meet) in heaven where God will wipe away every tear. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Timon and Lynne
  25. There's 4 of us about to do our CPS. We take turns to do the trips to Europe and use it occasionally in the uk. Furniture to charity shops etc.. The CPS training will be costly for the 4 of us (and inconvenient! ) By the way thanks for your previous help and advice with our mog questions!!
