  1. Tried a VT on my hitch climber yesterday... 3 wraps & 2 braids. 65mm ocean polyester eye to eye. Found it didn't grip too well.... Put 4 wraps in and it was too tight.... Haven't been climbing very long but quickly gaining confidence. I am convinced HC is the way forward but haven't found the right hitch yet... Any thoughts or advice would be well appreciated.
  2. Must admit I have been tempted to run it on cherry and plead ignorance....if........we got dipped. But decided some time ago that I wanted to live in the light and run the business that way as well. Done enough shady stuff in the past and never prospered through it. 3. We've tried loads of different kinds (and spent hundreds £££££) we always end up back at the gomtaro 300mm and the bigger natananko 330mm. (The natananko has a self clip design so it doesn't get pulled out of its scabbard by all the messy brown twigs & sticks inside the conifers) I would recommend using it with a saw-pod so you can strap it to the side of your lower leg..... Works a treat. Buxtons are pretty good on price. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  4. Don't like curved blades for horizontal cuts..... Awkward Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  5. Natananko 330mm, New one will fly through conifers without being cumbersome Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  6. Paul B assessed me on my 38. Throwing sticks for the dogs was an important component of the assessment!!!! Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  7. We send all our guys to Ian Morgan.. He and Martin Spooner are excellent. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  8. Ouch! I've been stopped by the old ministry of transport then by vosa. in 7&1/2 trucks before. Vosa were much tighter. I've heard that the new agency are contracted and have targets so are stricter again. One of the reasons we got the mog was that we were always over weight in our transit and LDV. We didn't want the hassle of a 7,1/2.... Putting people through their (new) licences then have them leave plus all the hassle of tachometers etc... Thanks Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  9. Thanks for this advice Bob, I'll go and get it in writing and keep it in the cab. Thanks, Timon Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  10. Looks like a handy set up with the chipper on the front.... Does the discharge lose velocity having an extension pipe feeding over the cab? Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  11. Don't know how we could fit the drawbar under the chipper . It sits quite low down even with linkage raised.... Also feeding the chipper would be awkward with the feed hopper pointing back towards the drawbar. (No turntable). Must admit the idea of a decent trailer is appealing Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  12. Thanks for this.... Chip trailer in the future sounds like an interesting prospect. We'd have to fit the chipper to the front pto.. Legal on motorways is great news, we're surrounded by them where we are. Nice one guys, enjoy the arb show if your going!! (Couldn't make it this year due to work commitments ) Definitely going next year..... Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  13. That's great.... Glad we haven't risked it on red. Also glad we bought it now, although it's a bit pricey on fuel it handles everything we can throw at it (we've been killing our 3 and 1/2 trucks and we are perpetually overweight with chipper) and once we've had it sign written it should draw some business..... One more thing........can we drive it on the motorway????!! Thanks for the help guys!! Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  14. RED OR WHITE FUEL THAT IS (not paint job). !!!! Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  15. We run a u1250. It has a pto chipper and chip box. It is registered and taxed as an agricultural vehicle. It is used for domestic arb jobs. Can anyone answer two questions: Can we run it on red fuel ? (Currently running it on white) Can we drive it on car licence with no tachometer ? I've heard so many conflicting opinions/interpretations on this subject. It would be great if someone actually knows the answer. Many thanks Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  16. All of the above!! Oregon flexi-blade 2.65 mm is the best I've ever used. It depends what head and diameter feed apertures are on your machine wether it will work. I've done a lot of strimming ... Church yards. heavy clearances etc.. If you can fit an auto-cut 440/2 head to your machine you should find this stuff very hard wearing. There is nothing more frustrating than strimming with unsuitable kit. Hope you get it sorted. Oregon flexi blade... 2.65 mm is the h Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  17. Thanks Dave, Great photos and vids. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  18. Hi David , Really neat job mate. We're just starting out but we're really busy. We're only able to do the most basic forms of lowering at the moment. I look forward to the day when we can work to that sort of standard and technical ability. Any tips ?? Thanks Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  19. Did a similar sized tree with drag out thru utility room at side of house. 2 x 3 1/2 ton trucks, 6 guys ,one chipper. One day. £1000 Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  20. Our 1250 works out about £1200 pa on a big fleet policy. We pay through the nose because of all the claims we've had on the rest of the fleet on our other businesses. Think I'll look into a separate policy for it judging by what I've seen you guys are paying...... Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  21. While the the robber gets taxpayer funded counselling so he can recover from his "trauma" and hefty compo claim to set him up for life..... The world is a sick place sometimes... Nice one Steven. All the best mate. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  22. Totally understand where your coming from. We've been had a couple of times (once at gunpoint where they emptied the safe) other times we've lost equipment. Along the way we've had to learn to adapt when it comes to our security. But since our tree business is owned and run by registered charity, fighting fire with fire is not an option for us. 23. Sorry to hear about your loss. When we had a health and safety audit done at previous site the H&S consultant told us that we needed to make sure that our premises were safe for burglars!!! If a thief enters your property and hurts himself you get sued... Outrageous but true. It's a sad state of affairs but it's not just the thieves you have to contend with these days. My advice is be wise when adding security measures, while it's very tempting to install aggressive measures they can come back and bite you (costly litigation etc...) as an ex-thief I would recommend muti-layered physical defences. Then perhaps false floors and walls for concealed storage. Leave out only old nackered machinery as decoys.. Hope you recover from your losses soon. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  24. Hi all, Just tried a practice climb in a nice wide oak tree using a distel on HC system. 65mm / 8mm eye to eye ocean polyester. There is a small amount of sit-back but nothing too excessive. Really enjoyed it and got used to it pretty quickly. Loved being able to tend the slack one-handed climbing the tree and returning from a limb walk. I also found that the option of using the middle hole on the HC for my lanyard gave me far superior work positioning when using my side strop there. So all in all a big thumbs up for the distel! 25. I'm nearly 49 and just passed my 38/39.... Absolutely loving it. I'll never be the quickest but I'm getting better and quicker with every climb. Hope I'm still climbing when I'm 60!! Aches and pains are a small price to pay... I'm 5'9. And 14 stone so could do with losing a stone perhaps. Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
