  2. This is along the lines of what I have done in the past when faced with a stem that is suspect. As long as you can get the customer to understand that you will be fair and not take advantage, generally they are sympathetic and you can come to some kind of agreement. Killed two brand new chains in a nail ridden stem last Thursday. One of them snapped which could of been nasty.

  17. Flyers provide the vast majority of our work. It is a tried and tested method. The thing that most people don't understand about this method is that it has to be a long term commitment. Continued, methodical and repeated coverage of suitable targeted areas is a big commitment of resources and has to be done properly. We use it for our furniture, landscaping and tree work businesses and really our flyers operation is a business in its own right. That's why it is successful. It's not something you can do once and expect to acquire lots of work. Besides, not many people take notice of one flyer posted through the door. It's when they see them come through repeatedly that it sticks in their minds. Just like any form of advertising really. It's not rocket science. It's just that it costs money to drive to drive the message home.

  21. Hi Bob. Bought from a well regarded merchant on here. One that they made up off a roll I guess as they sell it by the roll. I hit a buried nail and the rivet gave way. First time this has happened in nine years using saws. Timon

Hi mate Happy new year. I don't know how well you get on with you're old man or what it's like working for him. Here's some food for thought.... I do some fundraising work alongside the tree work and other stuff I'm involved with. One of my recent acquaintances in the fundraising side of things is a guy who started off much like you are, working for his old mans building firm. Started small but stayed faithful to the firm and slowly but surely built a stake in it. His old man past away years ago and this guy carried on building the firm. He is now semi retired and just involves himself in the things he really enjoys doing. The company he built with his old man and then inherited is now the largest privately owned construction firm in The Midlands with a turnover of £30m per year. This guy is obviously minted but he is also life rich, doing lots of cool stuff that he really enjoys doing and puts back into the community as well. What I am trying to say is; don't be too quick to part company with your old man, you never know where it may take you given time and hard work. Hope it works out for you mate.
  25. Happy new year Jon !!
