  2. I think/have found personally that general gardening ( esp digging weeding trimming hegdes etc ) is alot more hard work physically than felling trees.

  7. Its so you can practice the techniques for bigger tree on smaller trees like boring into the centre of hinge cuts etc. Also its the bar length that suits best the 40cc - 50cc saws used on the course & the tree sizes that are felled on the course.
  8. I don't bother having each log mm perfect as long it fits in the door of the stoves fire box so I just go at it with the chainsaw no measuring or anything. I cut to make it easy to split with an axe so I saw across knots etc rather than for uniform length. Arb waste etc doesn't often come in the right dimesions to make perfect looking logs anyway unlike firewood grade roundwood etc There logs not mars bars or breeze blocks so don't all come uniform size. Some people (often its women )can be overly fussy about logs appearance imo. If you really want to get acurate put some markers on your saw horse etc I suppose....
  9. Could be some kind of bacterial canker i reckon. https://www.rhs.org.uk/disease/bacterial-canker Fell it and replant with some different species imo

  11. My cat enjoys sitting on the roof and getting dive bombed by them.
  12. No but know a person who does some they use a single ring kiln (8ft I think). I helped out a few times seems alot of manaul work "hand ballling" loading logs and unloading the kiln and dusty bagging up. Think it could be made more efficent by be mechanizing abit? Trommel or some such for screening rather than manual sieving the fines & a branch logger straight into kiln maybe etc? NCF do the paper bags. Theres acres of overstood hazel coppice about that could be make into charcoal but maybe the sums don't add up to make if worth while?

  15. How many yrs growth is that? How about leaving them a few more yrs to get some chunkier logs then coppice the lot? From the photo thinning looks alot of hassle thus abit impratical in that thicket? Some thinning might be easier done once the area has being coppiced as they start to regen during the first fews yrs of the the next coppice cycle? Branch logger seems like a good idea.
  16. Blossom wilt https://www.rhs.org.uk/disease/blossom-wilt
  17. Bit easy Kew ones abit harder got the ginko one one wrong Quiz: Are you a tree genius? WWW.KEW.ORG Take our quiz to test your tree knowledge. This ones decent: British Trees by Leaves WWW.SPORCLE.COM Can you name the British trees by their leaves?
  18. Wood burning might be sustainable but a chainsaws and machinery to get the firewood aren't? As relies on on fossil fuels? But im no sure alot of high tech stuff that suppose to replace fossil fuels is that sustainable either....due to the need to extract so many mined resources. I class sustanable a somthing that could go on idefinetly for 1000yrs of yrs without depleting some limited resource that isn't virtually infinite like trees. Horse logging and hand felling trees with axes maybe are? As for pollution particle scrubbers? Long term wood burning likely isn't the best way to heat houses as all houses would be eventaully be " passive house" if people are really serious about being suitanable.... so could use other heating sources....
