  1. All the scrubby blackthorn willow sites etc that are in nature reserves I know of are being kept open or cleared for conservation reasons. Also birch and oak regen some fairly large cut to waste. I think alot of the good woodland bird habitat that has being lost was coppice such as hazel etc that is no longer cut/in roatation? Maybe the farming subs cut will mean some marginal land will go back to scrub? In some other EU countries huge areas of farmland have being abandoned. 2. Was the pepper tree easy to grow being tempted for a few yrs to try some. There a local nursery that has does exotic fruit trees had a whole selection of pepper trees: Sechuan Pepper Range - Jurassicplants Nurseries JURASSICPLANTS.CO.UK Also fancied pecan nuts
  3. Sounds sensible but still no idea & what about say a a really a ancient lapsed pollard? Think they would want to know about thoose being lopped large diameter branches etc - not some street lime done every 5 yrs or less,
  4. I was idly thinking its being less windy the last few yrs Might get storms but from day to day it seem less generally windy & more flat calm days with hardly a breeze. Maybe the wind is all concentrated on certain days so average speed could be near the the same but seem like theres being less constant prevailing winds. Being a cyclist means you take a greater notice of wind as even a breeze is very noticable if its a headwind. Nor exactly a scientific observation though.
  5. Thre more short term rapid climate change versus a slower natural speed of change is the issue that makes it harder to adapt to. Things such as the predicted seas lvl rise on not very long timescales, changes in rainfall patterns affecting agri productivity etc But I agree a reduced global pop would make adapting to climate change so much easier & also reduce climate change & increase quality of life as there would more of the finite nature based resourses to share out per person without surpasssing the numerous ecological damaging boundaries.
  6. Like the mound planting idea Probably best install some buried pipe irrigation system also as may need watering for a a few yrs most likely esp if its on a mound & they have spent so much on larger trees...... THE OLD ENGLISH METHOD OF PLANTING A TREE WWW.TREEDICTIONARY.COM
  7. https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/876642/Tree_Felling_-_Getting_Permission_-_web_version.pdf 2.2 Lopping and topping An exception applies for tree works involving tree surgery by way of lopping or topping, for example, pollarding. Such works are used today to maintain a tree in good health and to extend its lifespan in highly modified environments, such as streetscapes. These works do not require a felling licence. Not sure but this says no?
  8. How about dig a soakaway at the low end.
  9. Might well be 300 dead beech without first sorting drainage i reckon.
  10. Not sure why such a trench was needed unless its for large trees which will often do worse and require more care staking etc Hornbeam 77p each? Carpinus betulus - Hornbeam CHEVIOT-TREES.CO.UK Carpinus betulus - Hornbeam is an excellent versatile species which can either be used for forestry purposes or for hedging. Smaller trees bare root or cell grown are alot better.... Beech made struggle as looks like alot of compaction plus heavy clay? etc Also the trench has probably made the water logging worse.... Ive seen some beech die on better looking sites ( un compacted clay paddock) due to what i suspect was winter waterlogging where beech nearby are thriving in a slightly dryer bit only 20ft away... All hornbeam on the same site survived. Any fall to stick some drainage pipe along the bottom to drain off to some boundary ditch?
  11. Casuarina looks a interesting tree species.
  12. Its supoose to be an ancient woodland indicator species but if its only spread in last 10yrs not that ancient....

  15. Wool blend socks are alot less sweaty than either cotton or poly cotton ive found.
  16. Normally thay are all green probably they got cross pollinated @ the seed company with another type of sqaush by accident unless it was you who saved the seeds? Only will come true from seed if you grow one type isolated.
  17. 18. Ok I see. In the US they sell different vicousity grades for summer or winter etc Hopefully there is some suitable oil about in the UK that isn't £56 a litre.
  19. I have the hendon 3 leg adjustable japanese style one. No idea if its the best but its good.
  20. Wondering if before dumpy bags or metricfication did the UK used to use some imperial firewood measurement like the do in the US with cords?
  21. Nice would be a shame if all the effort was only to grow lawn grass faster, that then it just needed mowing more often but makes more sense to improve it for grazing. Guessing a max of 2-3 sheep on that area?
  22. Where does it say this tool needs a special grade of makita chain oil.? Im not disputing a more runny oil may be better suited but can't find any makita reference to it?
  23. I assume the chain is oiling ok you never confirmed? Its very easy to tell (as already mentioned) it should be flicking oil from end of bar. A piece of cardboard should get a line of oil splatter after a few secs of revving. Both veg oil and minieral chain oil can gum up the oil pump sometimes esp if the chainsaw has being sat un- used for awhile.
  24. How bout go full vicent van gogh on it? Pollard Birches Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) Fungi & bugs need a home 2 - & by the look of the garden not likely to fall over on anyone standing below.
