  1. Hi again Mitchel, Iv`e checked it out as I also have a saw with a dodgy stud, the original stud is part number 1123 664 2400 which is 8mm x 1.25 thread into the casing, Stihl do an oversize repair stud part number 1115 644 2405 which has a 10mm x 1.5 thread into the casing £2.50 + vat at my dealer. So all that need to do is get the stripped thread tapped out to 10 x 1.5mm, make sure that it`s totally oil free and fix the stud in with Loctite and let set for a bit. The case is made of plastic I think, although the dealer flinched slightly when I called it that, so best get it tapped out with a nice sharp HSS tap and not some crappy blunt carbon steel tap that`s been rolling about a garage floor for years. Any small engineering shop could do this in 10 mins, aye and if you do it yourself, and it`s a blind hole, watch you don`t bust through into the oil tank. cheers n good luck.
  2. If your`e talking about the bar studs loose in the casing,i believe that there may be an oversize repair stud kit available, i think i read this on here but i might be wrong. but it`s still crap. good luck
  3. hi, ,i hope it went well, i`m just about to do the same. cheers
  4. hi, oddly enough check out ebay, a large selection of discs starting at less than a tenth of that price. you`d need to try them to see the difference in quality. cheers
  5. I Know how you must feel Jam cause I had a similar hand injury 30 years ago, it probably isn`t much comfort now, but keep it clean and as soon as you can , keep it moving, I`m sure your`e in good hands and time is the healer, all the best.
  6. hi, one of the Granberg chain grinders has a has a guide attachment for sharpening hedgecutters, Chainsaw bars sell them, and there`s also a video demonstrating it`s use.
  7. probably about a month since i first heard the cuckoo here in Ross shire, i wondered then if it`s the same bird returning year after year, although i hear many of them, there`s one in a wood that i walk the dog through that calls from exactly the same place every spring, but iv`e never managed to catch sight of it, it`s a bit of a thicket, could it be the same bird ? how long do they live?? cheers
  8. Granberg clip n trim from chainsaw bars, iv`e got mine on 290 with a 16" bar, but ye need to watch out for your ears.
  9. A lifetime of working on engines and I wouldn`t thank you for an autotune anything, specially with the revs these wee engines are doing ,it`s no surprise that they self destruct if the carb is even a baw hair out.
  10. yep, I`Ve tried metallic driers, think the make is blackfriars, with some success, I also once met a cabinet maker who made his own natural varnish which was a mix of tung oil, his own varnish made from pine resin mixed with real turps and a touch of citrus oil, lovely stuff , i experimented with it and thought it was good as a top coat, as you said "a wiping varnish" but it had to be thin an ye had to be real quick. cheers
  11. I suspect the linseed oil element of "danish oil" or other diy concoctions to be responsible for the black staining down the grain, very quick to appear in lots of very expensive kitchen worktops and other things . As far as I know tung oil from the nut of a tree contains tannin which acts to protect against bacteria while linseed and other oils provide food for them,.... mildew! I know tung oil can dry with a slightly rubbery finish but if thinned enough and buffed well in it`s the best oil type protection against the elements I`ve found. Cheers.
  12. Hi, came home a couple of nights ago with elm cuttings from four different healthy looking mid sized trees from different locations and when I looked on here, this thread was at the top of "today`s posts". Thanks guys, all the info I could need.
  13. The horse stuff is not just arnica, it`s got chamomile, tea tree oil and aloe vera as well in an alcohol gel base. £7.70 for 250ml. Helps the inflamed tendons pretty quick for me and others. I agree that it`s absolutely best to modify your work practices if you can , but with a physical job that`s not really practical.
  14. Hi. I discovered this stuff by accident years ago, a lot less invasive than steroids etc, Arnica gel by a company called IV Horse, worked for my tennis elbow and still does when I get a twinge , check it out online......I know....I`m not a horse either....worth a try !!
  15. carved or any wood, a coat or two of clear wood preserver, not water based, cuprinol or similar, then as many coats of pure tung oil mixed 50/50 with turps as it will take rubbing off excess each time and letting dry, may take a while!! cheers
  16. Hi, I`ve found pure tung oil thinned with real turps [white spirit will do] to be the best for me, although as said before it needs to be well rubbed in and buffed up and on light wood you do get a slight yellowing or richening. The main problem with linseed oil is the high risk of mildew on any wood that can get damp. The mildew gets into the grain and ruins the job by turning it black. Of the drying oils, Tung oil is from a tree nut and has preserving qualities which make it safe to be used on items that come into contact with food, whereas many of the other oils are foods and can therefore get mouldy. Cheers.
  17. yep again, that makes sense, and I`ve seen that, and that`s what I`ll do. But I ain`t done it yet ,so that`s why it`s great to be able to learn from the experience of all you guys. Thanks, I Feel that I`ve been at college every time I come on here, great stuff.
  18. yep, and trying to get a handle on the finer points of detecting is ,funnily enough , a mine field !! Looked at these ones , there`s either no info or there two expensive, or both.
  19. Great, sounds like all the time i spent may not be wasted. Could do without punching in the word "detector" again for a couple of years !! Thanks for your encouragement .
  20. It`s a bit red at the end.
  21. Hi, same here, iv`e been getting all the stuff together over the past couple of months and the detector is the last piece of the jigsaw. Iv`e spent far to much time on the problem as you will probably know yourself if you`ve been looking into it. Anyway it`s in the post, a c-scope cs4pi, £200 SH on ebay. Through talking to loads of folk on the blower and looking on metal detecting forums I came to the conclusion that Pulse Induction or P I machines, designed specifically for beaches or highly mineralised ground MAY penetrate the wood further than the VFL`s, anyway there made in England and you can get the tech guy on the phone, he recons about 6-8" but We`ll see. Setting them up seems to be a bit of a dark art and of course everyone else wants machines that discriminate out iron so they only find gold and silver ! I was told by one guy [at a shop] that he would be able to get a nail at 18" but his detector cost over 4 grand. Anyway good luck, hope this helps. I`ll let you know how I get on. Cheers, Euan.
  22. Is that per capita ?? I`m not sure . I,as a Scot, would just like to experience a period of financial stability before I retire. I started in self employment in 1979....then thatcher .. then turmoil and greed ever since. imo they`re all a shower of small minded, corupt b******s trying to make money off the backs of the few of us that are actually left working for a living.
  23. grey squirrels have ,I believe , decimated the trees in my local wildish park over the last 15 -20 years, I saw a programme about Longleat where they were battling the same problem, they ringbark branches at the top of mature trees to mark their territory and the rot starts. try taking an air rifle into a park !!..........and what about the gangs of murderous magpies, hardly any wee birds left here. there`s no control these days .
  24. Yep, you could make an bum bag oil tank, it would go well with a heated handle in the winter and prob. weigh less than a L-ion battery!!! We might be onto something, or then again maybe not. Cheers
  25. smashing wee cartoon, aren`t the principles so simple !! When I was 14 I got " sook, sqeeze, bang, blaw" drilled into me,....if you could just get a 4 stroke to work upside down !!
