  1. Arborist to artisan ...... something I have been doing for nearly 20 years now still do a bit of climbing /felling / groundwork and driving lorries but about 30% of my income is now woodcraft , and yes there is loads of wood out there that goes to waste but being in the right place at the right time to get it is the hard part , but I never go short ..selling work is another thing ...another guy I know used to work in forestry for a while and is now one of the worlds leading wood artists ... check out Nick Agar ..turningintoart ( sorry can't do link ) I used to give him wood ! ... Terry...
  2. It has often crossed my mind as to how long some carvings will last , especially outdoors , I have seen spalted beech carvings sell for several thousand pounds and wonder if the buyer is aware it will rot away within 5-10 years , others I have seen I know will crack badly ( oak ) ...... re the above crocodile .. I would turn it over and scrape and brush as much loose soft wood as possible out ,let it dry , and then generously apply creosote or other such preservative and then brace if required , when replacing the piece ensure it is raised above ground slightly ( on bricks ) to help its longevity
  3. The Oak fair near Sherborne ( zummerzet ) August bank holiday ( I think ) more craft and art related not Arb but very pleasant last year , weather , atmosphere and food ...
  4. Try as much as you can to be ambidextrous , especially when climbing using prussik / blakes hitch .
  5. Cherry of that dimension will almost certainly split as it dries , ( years ) if it does dry without splitting then it will be a pretty tough lump of wood to turn compared to doing most of the work when green .. Terry ..
  6. All my bowls start off like that piece , I then trim as much to shape with a chainsaw , a sort of roundish dome , then attach a faceplate to the flat side then turn the exterior of the bowl , leaving a chucking point ( dovetail ) then turn the interior of the bowl leaving overthick , to allow for ovalisation during drying , after rough turning I coat with PVA glue ( unibond ) then put aside to dry slowly , apiece this size would take a good while , also this is not the best time of the year for doing this ... Terry ...
  7. Yes , I saw this as well and really enjoyed it , however it did not really show the finished chair very well and seemed to skip over the very time consuming part of all the final shaping and sanding ( which would have been quite considerable ) and application of Oil and wax etc to be polished and buffed .Good stuff though !!! Terry...
  8. I use it for turning and it is one of my favourite woods , however I do not think it would be much use for furniture as it is not hard enough and will dent / mark easily but may suit some crafts .... a few examples ....
  9. I resemble that remark !!
  10. Why no ear muffs ?
  11. A hollow vessel / pod ... about 300 mm tall made from Oak and turned very thin 3-4 mm and intentionally allowed to warp distort for a very organic effect / style
  12. A load of work finished and in stock before going out for sale
  13. Fascinating stuff ! Conjures up endless possibilities . I spoke to a chair maker in Dorset who has been growing some Ash saplings around formers he made for certain parts , also seen a load of sculptured trees / shrubs on t'internet in Australia along similar lines . Although Willow is quick growing and easy to work I think Ash or Hazel would be better . I am working on some stick type furniture at the moment , mostly Ash .
  14. Any old farm or industrial contraption with cast legs or stands like this are well sought after at auctions nowadays for this sort of project and they always seem to look good , this one included , well done ! Terry

Yes plenty of time to eat fried food and read porn mags ha ha , in reality waiting to be loaded / unloaded .. How many hours do you spend actually climbing in a day ??

Ben Edmonds ..... a lorry driver might make 25k per annum but that will be for 55-60 hour weeks and stupid o clock start times !!
  17. A couple of hollow vessels recently completed from Yew , one is a commission for a customer , both about 300 mm tall ( not including finials ) and pierced .

    My thoughts exactly !!
  19. It is like it in all trades these days I think , during recession no one trained anyone / got rid of staff etc now things are busy where do you get ( good ) staff .... any Romanian Arbs ? ... I do some lorry driving through an agency who are always wanting me to work , and recently on nearly all industrial estates I visit I see banners outside premises ... STAFF WANTED... the companies I work for ask if I want a full time job .. NO .. make the most of it, as who knows what might happen after the election !!
  20. Lovely looking bit of work there Ian , I especially like the use of " butterfly ties " across the cracks , I use them myself sometimes but always make them black . I am planning a few tables like this myself in summer , I have all the wood ,just waiting till it is all dry enough to size, assemble and finish . Terry ...
  21. Pan , glad you liked them , I personally have found the "coloured " ( mostly scorched with a blowlamp ) bowls have sold well , I had a few large Ash bowls roughed out for some time and a few I finished normallybut they were slow to sell , so experimented a bit and came up with the finish you can see , I have now roughed out about another dozen or so 15-18 inch bowls for the same purpose over the winter and they are now drying nicely the first should be ready in summer ... The spalting in the Ash was not really very soft at all so no probs .. .Terry ..
  22. Dan , it looks like you are on a steep learning curve !! ha ha ...We have all been there and to be honest I really enjoyed the struggle and each achievment seemed so rewarding I could not wait to get back at it , watch out when you try to use the skew chisel , I have had one for about 20 years and it is hardly worn . Perhaps you could get some assistance / advice from a local turner , it speeds up the learning process greatly , keep your early attempts to judge your progress by . If you are in the Arb industry you will have access to so much free / cheap wood then just practice ..a lot ... Terry..
  23. I have recently finished a few pieces using the same wood / finish .... a hollow form with a matching bowl , not sure why really !! Ash that has been coloured and scorched , and Ash that is nicely spalted .... The hollow vessels are about 12" tall and the scorched / coloured bowl 17" dia and 5" deep and the spalted bowl about 12" dia and 5" deep ....all of this was from an Arb waste / firewood pile ...Terry
  24. Lovely looking bit of Beech , do you have an end use in mind , for your own use perhaps ? or hoping to sell ?
  25. I think the lefty, PC fascists ( the BBC is full of them ) are determined to get him !! He's got enough money so I do not know why he does not tell them where to go !!
