  1. 1) Many of them get your number when you're buying something online and are forced to stick in a phone number (which they then pass on). If I know they have no reason to ring me I've started sticking in my local MPs number 2) TPS seems to be a complete waste of time as they never react if you complain. I needed a new home phone so i splashed out on a BT truecall model which forces callers to announce themselves before it rings the handset and allows you to block any you don't want. Anyone who rings you regularly just add them and they come straight through without the hassle. It's incredible what a month of having had it has done to nuisance calls - from 10 a day to probably 3 a week (and even those don't bother to go through to the second stage) 3) If anyone does get through these barriers my plan is to tell them not interested, but know a man who might be and give them your number
  2. Excellent video and thanks for posting the mistake - helps us all to learn:)
  3. My best results with bark remaining have been to wet turn (the bark is quite adhesive at that stage) and then let it dry. I've tried turning with bark on dry wood but it's fairly random as to what remains attached if you don't glue it back on.
  4. I'd have thought that there were a few potential conflicts of interest in the AAs work as well - accreditation, standards, courses, advice etc?
  5. Ooops must have missed that! Well it gives some food for thought, but I think I'll hang fire on buying a can of Osmo for a little while. I'd be interested in hearing what your thoughts are after another few months.
  6. Are these finished yet? can you put us out of our misery and let us know which is which ?
  7. Forgive my ignorance, but what is "Chapter 8"?
  8. I have to say I totally agree. I don't work in Arb but I work across a lot of other industries and I see people confusing certificates and course attendance for ability and the right behaviour. Part of the problem is HR and Health and Safety reqs - it's easy to measure / prove that someone attended a course / has a certificate even if it means nothing in the workplace. I've seen lots of people with the ability and correct attitude but no certificates and vice versa but we've become hung up on trying to make everything academical. (and I say this as someone with a degree (but no chainsaw certs!))
  9. 056AV (complete working) just went for £214 on Ebay if that helps http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Stihl-056-AV-SUPER-Used-running-chainsaw-runs-well-great-powerful-saw-25-Bar-/121266573114?_trksid=p2047675.l2557&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT&nma=true&si=nEnUBEKFB%252B4ze6fU4rZDtmPZKpA%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc
  10. Green "cemetery" / memorial wood. Charge people for burial plot/memorial trees - supposed to becoming more popular.
  11. How about a "what timber is this?" subforum within woodcrafting?
  12. On another (non-Arb) forum I use they have an alert function that automatically tells you when someone has posted to a thread that you've already posted to (similar to when you get an alert for a pm but not quite as annoying )
  13. Is my electric Flymo eligible?
  14. No point in using an accountant, they don't like people appearing at 8pm on a friday night with a bunch of receipts and a form to fill in
  15. I think the better question is whether there is sufficient profit in logs to be able to take both the hit of working capital costs of holding over 5 years and the investment in storage to hold the logs over that period (and my guess would be no!) If you really want to invest in wood better to buy some woodland and hold that - land doesn't deteriorate in quality over time, the trees will still be growing over that additional 5 years and trees don't need storing
  16. Thanks for the pointers guys
  17. An hour and a half to go and finally submitted - nothing like taking it up to the limit
  18. I prefer the finish on the right (more detail apparent, better contrast) - but I also prefer the grain on the table on the left!
  19. Is there anyone on here from the Manchester/ Oldham / West Yorkshire area who mills and sells hardwoods? Don't need anything specific atm but would like a friendly local source when the mood for a project takes me!
  20. I was afraid you'd ask for that well here goes ...the bowl is better than the photo but I would say that! I achieved the black lines on the rim by applying more pressure while burnishing on the sharp edges.
  21. Thank you both for the encouragement. I ended up just buffing with mixed shavings (from the pile under the lathe!) at v high speed and got a great finish ( good enough to show all the defects due to my poor turning at any rate). I still have the odour and have collected a bag of camphor wood shavings for later use.
  22. Yep, that's what I thought Not sure that I'll get the grain contrast and colour really coming out with just buffing but would be a shame to lose the smell. Wondering if I might finish just the inside or outside to get a balance of colour and smell but that's not ideal either. It's on my desk as I type and the smell is so strong I'm almost getting a high from it!
  23. I'd be interested in seeing someone else's approach and learning more but you're a little far away. Any chance of a few before and after photos and some explanation of why you've done what?
