  1. veg peelings, barbeque remains, leaves, hedge chip and even wood shavings from the lathe or planer all go into the compost heap and from there onto the garden
  2. I discovered a half turned bowl blank made of camphorwood in the chaos of my garage/workshop the other day which I decided to finish. A beautiful aroma when turning it (I decided to forgo the use of a mask - possibly stupid, but you only live once and in the greater scheme of things probably no worse than the half bottle of red I shall wash the dust down with later this evening!). It leaves the question though of how to finish the bowl in order to stand any chance of benefiting from the smell in the future - any suggestions?
  3. I've not used one of the chainsaw rings but have used an arbortech pro cutter in a grinder. I don't have any problem with it and wouldn't consider it as dangerous as a chain saw (but also not able to do everything you can with a carving blade either). The only warning I'd give is that the chips off the blade are coming off very fast as as you're closer to the blade they still have quite a lot of momentum when they hit you. No issue if you're wearing a proper visor etc, but I did find my thighs covered in loads of small bruises after the first time I used it wearing jeans!

    Husky 395 xp?

Am I right in thinking that this is too good to be true and therefore a fake? husqvarna 395xp chainsaw | eBay If so what are the things that give it away?
  6. Thanks for satisfying my curiosity
  7. Looks really good. I notice there's no bottom rail to the frame - is that to avoid water collecting in the joints? How did you join the middle boards - biscuits?
  8. Does the 180€ include eye protection?
  9. A couple of ideas... Porthole on a door (Easiest if it's internal) Top of a container (eg for umbrellas, snooker cues etc), with rods (like in chair backs) going down to a solid base
  10. This thread got my interest peeked and I realised how little I knew about the subject so started browsing and found the following which might help anyone else who is as clueless about two stokes as I am: Gordon Jennings - Two stroke tuners handbook http://www.amrca.com/tech/tuners.pdf
  11. How stable are these for chainsaw carving? Is it just the weight of the wood that stops it moving around?
  12. Try stretches before during and after milling. A good one is where you stick hand flat on wall in front of you and straighten arm to reach the wall, then try rotating wrist / elbow while hand is stuck to wall, hard to explain and probably sounds daft but might help. Other than that yep us oldies suffer, so try to mix up activities to avoid too long in same position etc
  13. I use an old willans harness (rock) for climbing trees but I'm obviously only an amateur. Only a single (central) attachment point so no side to side stability.
  14. The difference in size between a 380 cc bike and 1500cc bike is also normally quite obvious:) (can't off-hand remember any 1500 cc yamaha's anyway?) (I've an R1200GS - once dropped, never forgotten!)
  15. OK thanks
  16. Considering buying a saw being sold as working but with no external clutch cover (the side casing that encloses the bar etc). Am I OK testing it without a cover (and without bar / chain ofc) provided I keep my fingers etc at respectful distance and have some way of preventing bar oil p*ssing everywhere or are there other things I need to be wary of?

    Mitox saws

    Thanks Gardenkit that's really useful.

    Mitox saws

I'll probably end up doing that
  19. The problem with a lot of zero hrs deals is that there is often a ban on working for anyone else and no guarantee of any hours at all.

    Mitox saws

That was one but I also wondered about the CS56 which is supplied with an oregon bar (but I can't find which)
  21. I tend to agree with Paul (and I'm a self employed management consultant and have seen both sides of the fence!). You can build flexibility with things like annual hours contracts (NOT zero hours contracts which imho are an abuse). The two other questions you need tio ask are what are the benefits of employing staff? (it's not all negative, especially if you enjoy developing people) and what are the hidden costs of employing contractors?
  22. No it's a gyroscope that you start off with a pull cord and then twist your wrist around in circles to keep it going/increase speed - Just type Powerball into google and you'll see what I mean!

    Mitox saws

Hi Rob, Yes I know you don't sell saws I know that a lot of the Mitox saws come with Oregon bars (for example the 5020 has an Oregon bar ref of 208SLGK095 - so I assume that's a K095 mount?), but I can't find the info online for the saws I might be interested in. Thanks anyway, I'll keep looking around.
  24. Have you tried a powerball? I've found it quite effective.
  25. Interesting link Sloth, would this mean if I replaced a fence on my forest boundary with a hedge (over several years) where there has never been a hedge before, that I'd be subject to the same restrictions if I later changed my mind, found I couldn't keep it alive etc etc?
