I cant think of one occasion where I wished our grab was smaller, it can grab four or five of those sticks on the trailer at a time so all a smaller grab would do is take longer. Also stropping would be a pain being a top seat , I am nearly always loading /unloading on my own and would be up and down like a yoyo. Edit, my only regret is that the grab cant be dropped off, its hard piped and every now and then it would have been handy to use it as a normal crane. Bob

Done my last day yesterday TF. I will definitely be looking at all the alternative courses that go to make up the hours for the future 8 hours per year. At least it would be a ticket for your money rather than sweet FA. Bob

I would get the biggest one you can. Ours is a bit of a beast and opens up to about 8`and that will only just go round a 4` diameter log , not that the pos will lift a full length stick that big but once you grab one end you can normally wrestle them onto the trailer. The big ones are also better for grabbing up big piles of brash and crushing it down before loading it on . Bob

Riparian landowners who have land running up to the edge of a river are responsible for keeping the vegetation in check and dealing with any fallen trees etc. The truth is they will normally leave it until they receive threatening letters from the EA who will just do it and bill them if they dont respond. The EA in years gone by used to do this for nothing but the emphasis is now clearly with the land owners. Canals are normally dealt with by a society/charity, because there is a tow path that they own it basically means they own the land up to the waters edge. I am going to show my age now:blushing: Going back in time when men were men and pansy`s were flowers hex blots and nuts were made from hex bar. No chamfers were put on either and washers were needed to stop the work piece getting gnarled up when tightening bolts or nuts. If you look at any modern bolt or nut you will see they are made with the radius on the edge forming its own washer so that for conventional bolting up of metal parts there is no need for an extra washer. Obviously spreading the load with washers is necessary on some apps like plastic mudguards and ali but for general steel fabs its not. Most of us have just trollied along with this and done the hours with sweet FA to show for our time , money and trouble other than the ticket. You can elect to do the crane course which counts as 8 hours and the forklift course which again counts as 8 hours. Not a high prize but a ticket of training for the said bit of kit rather than nothing. The adr course (Tanker drivers ) which takes five days also counts for the 35 hours so its probably going to be worth getting these in for the obligatory 8 hours a year we have to do in the future. No you dont need it but I know for a fact the police and vosa are targeting plenty of stops so I just want to be able to hand over the card and be on my way. Whats wrong with the exemptions is there is no way of registering them, so those that dont have them will probably have a good long wait at the roadside while they establish this. Bob

Like I said before no problem for this guy. he did about an hour then snored his head off for the rest of the day. Two of the lads could not speak or understand a word of english so they played games on their phones all day . I have one day left of this mind numbing Bull.

Ours are paid on a Wednesday for this very reason. Not many of their mates about weekdays to go on an extended bender with . It works. Bob

I like the look of these mobile mills on the trailers . Just a couple of questions , is it ultra critical to get them level when you are mobile milling also why has no one fitted a crane on one so it can self load/unload ? Bob

I had to confiscate our grinder , the lads were just too heavy handed with it and were munching through too many rolls of chain. Files only for them and I only use it if a chain gets wrecked. Bob

I know that if they are clean , care is taken and a decent torx driver is used they come out but really Timberwolf should have redesigned this a while ago. If the blades were a few mm thicker the full depth torx bolt could have been used saving a lot of grief. Even the fitter at Green plant says they have to chop some of them out. Bob

Some have little choice but to use 3.5 tonners as it is costly to obtain ops licence & maintain a larger vehicle.

Nothing like as expensive as being done for running overweight. A guy I know that runs a canter with a nice ali tipping body with a roller shutter toolbox behind the cab was pulled at leatherhead a few months back by vosa and found to be overweight. They took off most of the load before they could go on their way and they had to call a taxi for the third man because the thing cant even use all the front seats without putting the front axle over. He got a two grand fine and so did his boss, thats enough money to pay for a load of driving lessons and good bit towards a decent truck. Just think about it £1000 a ton for being over. A canter running about on HD springs with two ton excess weight on it , can you imagine the grief if that truck was involved in a fatal car crash. Bob

Double check the height of the allen headed bolts vs the torx , I fitted the shallow headed allen bolts to ours and because they we very slightly taller in the head they trashed the anvil. Yours may well be ok but the ones I got were just that tiny bit bigger. Edit, you should be able to put a straight edge across the blade without touching the heads of the bolts. Bob

All I have done on any of the 24v trucks we have is run a two core cable via a fuse to one battery . That will do everything 12v How steep was the hill and did the brakes pull you up ok at the bottom Bob

Just finished my third day and most of the class have slept through the entire course . I dont think the lad below was awake for an hour of it, another great idea brought to you by the EU Bob

I think snapon own most of the quality tool manufacturers , I swear by snapon for workshop use and dont have much else . Everything that has been worn out or broken has been replaced with no quibble by the mobile snapon guy who is in the area every week, one phone call and the man is here with the FREE replacement. How can you fault that ? Expensive yes, inferior not a chance. That said I would not buy it for the lads or put it the truck as a service set. Bob

GDG`in lightwater had their pile of chip spontaneously combust, the fire brigade were backwards and forwards for days. In the end they made him cover it with thousands of tons of dirt. Nightmare. Bob
