  1. Not me either, there are no full service Stihl dealers in this area - only hardware stores that send the saws away for service. Getting parts shouldn't be a problem anyway - someone likely isn't doing his/her job properly (or have credit issues) in the supply chain, dealer or distributer? Of course it could happen that a part is in short supply for a (very) limited time, but something is seriously wrong if it is for a long time, specially on a model that is in production. Maybe the plastic handlebars are a weak point, so they are in high demand - I don't really know, but haven't heard anything about it on any of the several chainsaw forums I visit most days. Anyway, either the dealer or the distributer should of course strip the part off a new saw, to get the issue solved in reasonable time.
  2. Even if that happened, why do you think part supply would be any better?
  3. That wasn't what my comment was about. Even if the dealer will not work on the saw, he should of course sell parts and bars....
  4. Quite a few people will want it in parts of the US, and it is within the recommended range.
  5. Yes, but I would say it is the normal thing to do anyway. Why not simply run the Aspen premix.
  6. As far as I know, that is not correct. VXL cutters are ordinary semi-chisel, not chamfer chisel like VX. Also, the VXL cutters do not havef the low-vibe "heel". Someone once told me that the cutters of VXL are Carlton - which would fit with the differenses, and well could be true (the brands have the same owner).
  7. I don't really know - but VXL does have longer cutters than most other 3/8" lo-pro chain. It should only matter regarding the Vibes etc. when cutting with the bar tip though.
  8. ...or you could try streight VX.
  9. Yes, the open ported saws in that "family" was the 42 and the 246.
  10. True - but of course he can put a sorter bar on it. If it is a US saw, I would also ask the seller if it is set up with .325 or 3/8". Easy to fix that too, of course - just swap the rim....

I assume the operater manual does say something about this?
  12. A low quality Poulan made model that dealers often refused to sell. Not because it was Poulan made, but because it was a bad design, not on par with earlier Pouilan made Huskys. I understand it has been discontinued somewhat prematurely, along with the 235/236. Tooless hain tensioners always are a bad idea.
  13. Chain that is "creeping" on idle could well be caused by the idle adjustment beeing off.
  14. Yes, very tight! You should be able to easily do it with only two fingers on the chain!
  15. It is a great saw - likely the best 50cc saw ever made!
  16. Most issues I have read of has been caused by operaters not reading the important parts of the manual - specially the parts about starting procedure (it is a bit different from most saws) and run-in of the AT system/carb.
  17. Disregarding the 14" thing, and thinking 15" instead - the best would be the 346xp (if you still can find one) and the 550xp (that replaced the 346xp) - not much doubt about that!
  18. Saws shouldn't be "measured" by the bar length they come with, but some people do - resulting in saw brands offering cheap and weak small saws with way too long bars on them..... The above is most common in the US market, but it happens elsewhere as well. Also, the bars in 3/8" picco/lo-pro/hobby/mini that fit the cheap (and other small) saws all are 1-2 inches shorter that the "called" length. As 14" (called) bars only come in that pitch (not in .325 or regular 3/8"), I assume that is what you had in your mind. If you are serious about cutting firewood, you likely want a better saw than those that are rated by their bar length by the seller (and much better than the MS180)!
  19. That's contrary to most "reports" I have read on different forums - but I have no personal experience with either model.
  20. It doesn't, as it isn't possible to make. The drive tangs would interfere with the splines. 9-pin is the only fairly common .325 option, but larger ones are of course made.
  21. Those are all much weaker saws than the 455 Rancher, and are not really suited as replacements. Out of those tree, the Makita clearly is preferable (but find one with a shorter bar).
  22. There really aren't any good Stihl options at the moment, what you need top consider is the 550xp and the 560xp.
  23. Is it possible to change the heading of this thread? It looks a bit odd that it says 257XP, when there never was such a model?
  24. Pure collectors item, but I don't know what they go for in the UK.
  25. The serial number will tell which year and week it was made.
