  1. Hi made my first candle stick holder will take some pics later but disaster has struck the grub screw that holds the tool rest in place has broken and I am now having trouble finding something to fit I tried a bolt but it just kep coming undone but I may have the opportunity to have a posh lathe with a movable face plate for big bowls , but going to have another go at finding something to replace the broken grub screw . Cheers Mark

Hi I have used Sadolin loads and that does what it says on the tin but it does sit on the wood , Osmo is also good , so is danish oil it all depends on what you want it to look like dry cedar will drink the oil but that’s not a bad thing it just means a few coats if it was my own and I didn’t have a customer with their opinion then it would be prob osmo Cheers Mark
  7. Hi Guys, just a quick update , I have been managing to do some bits and bobs at my workshop but I am surprised at how unfit I have got 2 short days and I ached all over, but can’t wait to be able to walk , the iwalk I have has been ace but a bit unstable when chainsaw carving , I am back to fracture clinic tomorrow afternoon and I am hoping they will say I can start to pu weight on my leg , it’s going to be weird to start with but got to start getting back to work, it’s a proper struggle at the mo I do have some things for sale I will post a few pics a bit later got wheelchair hoovering and dishes to do Cheers Mark
  8. Hi guys I was just reading Timon’s post about the ear defenders on his new climbing hat and it prompted me , I have an Airshield Pro helmet, and it’s ace but when I got the ear defenders to go with it I just couldn’t use them , the Airshield has a fan in it and the ear defenders amplified the noise to an unbearable level so I was wondering if any of you have had a similar problem and what if anything you did to fix it Thanks Mark
  9. To my knowledge there are also a lot of plane trees being felled in London , so this leads me to think that our big cities are undertaking felling of mature trees for some hyped up reasons and giving the contracts to massive company’s like Amey there is something wrong about this picture , I will say no more being an old punk rocker I bet you can guess where I stand but then again maybe not ,our towns and cities would be even sadder places if we let all the mature trees get felled. Cheers Mark
  10. Yeah trifor winch defo best hand winch out there

I agree with the above most of it looks F##ked maybe get somebody with an Alaskan to mill the biggest stick on site , you will know from the first cut if it’s worth milling the rest , shame you didn’t get there a few yrs ago , good luck though we may be wrong and you could get some nice boards do post some pics if you do mill it Cheers Mark

  14. Like most people I do try and clean and sharpen at the end of the day but sometimes just can’t be bothered, one thing I do I have a small scrub brush and every refuel I brush the caps off so many less visits to the shop to get the carb cleaned especially on my carving saws Cheers Mark
  15. Hi not sharpened yet just Haven’t had an opportunity my girlfriend is doing her best to make sure I don’t over do it but back in the workshop tomorrow so will have a go I am sure I will be ok I am used to sharpening my framing chisels and small carpentry ones can’t be that different can it ? Hopefully I will get time to start a small bowl I will keep you all informed on my progress Cheers Mark

  19. Ha funny you say that , it was all in some foreign language, but thanks for bothering to find it for me , I will just keep at it with the face plate and see how I go but will defo be on the lookout for some hollowing out tools , Thanks for all your help Cheers Mark

  21. Hi my lathe is a kinzo not sure if it’s a good make prob not , how do I know what chuck will fit on it I had a look on eBay and just wasn’t sure some were like £20 and some were quite a bit more , mine has a face plate with it , that can be used for bowls can’t it , sorry for the basic questions but it’s all new to me , but very enjoyable I would love to be able to make very big vases like 3/4 ft eventually Thanks Guys Mark
  22. Hi my lathe is a kinzo not sure if it’s a good make prob not , as for uniform thickness surely if it’s thicker at the bottom it will be more stable and less likely to get knocked over but hey I am just learning Cheers Mark
  23. Hi guys , I have a question on my lathe it has a face plate how do I know how long a blank it will hold safely if I want to turn a deep bowl or vase ? Thanks in advance Cheers Mark
