not being rude ,but ,suggestions could be determined by your budget.....of how many K£? little point in recommending something out of budget.....

try a blade with a bigger set to the teeth, sounds as tho the fibrous nature of softwood is binding on the blade, giving you better clearance so less drag...

keep an eye on them for insect attack too( usually June to Aug), especially if stored in full sun, heat ferments sugars in sap and attracts the little b******s.. you can mill oak in summer if boards are sticked with proper sticks and maybe builders hessian wrapped over cut logs to reduce air flow thereby slowing drying rate,

afternoon all, I have had an enquiry to convert two open grown Oaks into boards, telehandler available on site I believe. yes, I did it several years ago , out of 2" box hinged one side , lifting the other by using a spare hydraulic spool on the autotrek driving the lift mechanism WP_20180821_09_06_37_Pro.mp4 I revised the clamping mechanism as it restricted depth i could cot down the cant, I would recommend 3x2" box for top section as a big cant will pull the bars as you cut and release tension as you go down messing up accuracy of cut a little. but cutting 100m2 of 200mm wide of larch in a few weeks with it. or .... fell the trees , put them on a trailer, and take them 1mile up the road to Timb a Haul in Brick kiln road to mill them for you....or you could give me a call or pm and I would give you a price for coming out to mill them on site .....so many options...

thanks for the mention chap... but Tom @ treecreeper knows my limitations, and I don't have anything big enough to mill that sequoia for him, he wants it thru and thru and to run a chainsaw mill of the size needed for that job, is a young mans game.... and I havent been one of them for a long time!

as 12% moisture content weighs in at 630kgs /m3 (according to MR William.A.Lincoln author of "world woods in colour" page 219 btw) not sure fresh felled it is going weigh 750kgs/ metre length at 1mt quarter girth.. but crack on mate 👍 🤘 -

that log is not going on any ifor williams trailer legally....nearer 5 tonnes methinks.. ave 40"QG @ 166" long is approx 150Hft3....just saying -

I use "Plantoil" band saw blade emulsion, fully biodegradable within 21 days, costing £170.00 inc vat for 500litres. It would go further if the mix was weakened down from 20:1, so even cheaper/litre. Why would you use anything other than something made for the job if you are at all concerned about health and welfare and possible ground contamination? Tim

ok, Random snapping does not occur with the 4"bands I use, there is always an audible , as well as a possible visual oscillation of the band, warning of impending doom enabling you to stop cutting and change.

you were given a warning by yours ears , next time pay heed to them , and you might have saved the band.

if I were asked to mill this log I would recommend splitting in half down heart crack, then split again into quarters, thereby keeping all the possible issues with iron in one quarter, to later mill into larger sections( thereby reducing the chances of hitting metal), the remaining 3/4 to be mill into nice stable clean QS boards, with any heart faults to one side of the board which will be of managable sizes to move by hand. For example , photo below is ms880 c/w 48" bar

Personally I would avoid Bennets if their re tipping service of circular blades is anything like their efforts on some bandsaws I once sent them, the workmanship was more third world than precision.... I would have thought any large resharpening specialist service would do a half decent job having brazed on the tips then side and top ground them, I would recommend Edwards precision saws in devon, if they do the job properly then any carriage cost is worth the money.
