  1. I've seen bits of this being built too. Will be interested to have a look at it when it's open. Mind you, looking at trees from the ground was good enough for my granddad!
  2. I can think of worse ways to go!
  3. That's already planted, plus some laurels, which aren't big enough yet to do much. Still pretty noisy though!
  4. Interesting, thank you. Just considering buying a house by a fairly busy road and was wondering which trees to plant to reduce the sound...
  5. I'm impressed how neatly your conveyor stacks the logs!
  6. Could be. It's been pretty cold here, so perhaps it's more warmth they need now. Don't think the mice have eaten them as the soil is undisturbed. No, I won't do anything, I'll leave them be and hope they still come through.
  7. I planted mine in October, immediately after collecting. On looking at the pots, the soil seems a bit dense perhaps, though I did mix sand and compost in. Perhaps I didn't plant them deep enough? Or perhaps I'm just impatient! Cold here at night but warmish when the sun is out, so hopefully they're sprouting down below...
  8. Still no shoots from my sweet chestnuts yet, and we've had a few cold.nights recently. How far yours getting on Steve? Maybe stratification is the way forward...

    Sat Nav

Google maps on an Android phone beats my built-in car satnav every time.
  10. Weed badger...?
  11. Thanks chaps. Hoping to plant a small wood at one end of a paddock. Fingers crossed!
  12. What sort of area are you putting the 1000 plants into? Good luck, look forward to the finish pics. Hopefully I'll be doing something similar myself next year...
  13. Yup, just me! Cheers. Strange - I read it a couple of times to make sure I wasn't missing a password, but I still missed it!
  14. I can't watch the video without entering a Vimeo password. Just me?
  15. Thanks. Be interested to see how long it takes to get branch logger sizes trunks vs log sized trunks.
  16. Also impressive. What variety is that? And how long till you can cut it again / what size will it be?
  17. Impressive growth on the willow. How long until you can harvest again do you think? And how thick are the eucalyptus stems / when might they be harvestable for logs? Thanks for the update.
  18. Possibly a bit late, but can you not tilt the roof so it's higher at the front and rain runs down the back? Otherwise it will drip on you when you go to get logs. Plus it's easier to fill when the front end is more open. Suppose it depends a bit on what drainage is like at the back?
  19. Nothing relevant to add, but just to say many thanks for all your hard work Steve and the mods
  20. Can't see any pics chap?
  21. No problem, I refer to it a lot! We've had a few frosts down here, but just the odd one here and there really. My willow rods are shooting, and hyacinths in flower - but nothing from the sweet chestnuts. And my cherry seed pots blew away altogether!
  22. According to the FC http://www.forestry.gov.uk/pdf/fcpg018.pdf/$FILE/fcpg018.pdf sweet chestnuts are one of the few seeds that don't need stratification and will germinate without it. The seeds are recalcitrant. Having said that, I suppose stratification might still help, especially as winter hasn't really been too cold this year. And that might be why Steve's have germinated and mine haven't yet!
  23. Apparently sweet chestnut grows easily from seed. I've got 20 or so seeds in pots in my garden, planted as soon as I collected the seed - only an inch or two deep though. They shouldn't need stratification, they're only lightly dormant. Having said that, none of mine have sprouted yet!
  24. looks good.
  25. How long did you season them for?
