  1. Yup, just me! Cheers. Strange - I read it a couple of times to make sure I wasn't missing a password, but I still missed it!
  2. I can't watch the video without entering a Vimeo password. Just me?
  3. Thanks. Be interested to see how long it takes to get branch logger sizes trunks vs log sized trunks.
  4. Also impressive. What variety is that? And how long till you can cut it again / what size will it be?
  5. Impressive growth on the willow. How long until you can harvest again do you think? And how thick are the eucalyptus stems / when might they be harvestable for logs? Thanks for the update.
  6. Possibly a bit late, but can you not tilt the roof so it's higher at the front and rain runs down the back? Otherwise it will drip on you when you go to get logs. Plus it's easier to fill when the front end is more open. Suppose it depends a bit on what drainage is like at the back?
  7. Nothing relevant to add, but just to say many thanks for all your hard work Steve and the mods
  8. No problem, I refer to it a lot! We've had a few frosts down here, but just the odd one here and there really. My willow rods are shooting, and hyacinths in flower - but nothing from the sweet chestnuts. And my cherry seed pots blew away altogether!
  9. According to the FC http://www.forestry.gov.uk/pdf/fcpg018.pdf/$FILE/fcpg018.pdf sweet chestnuts are one of the few seeds that don't need stratification and will germinate without it. The seeds are recalcitrant. Having said that, I suppose stratification might still help, especially as winter hasn't really been too cold this year. And that might be why Steve's have germinated and mine haven't yet!
  10. Apparently sweet chestnut grows easily from seed. I've got 20 or so seeds in pots in my garden, planted as soon as I collected the seed - only an inch or two deep though. They shouldn't need stratification, they're only lightly dormant. Having said that, none of mine have sprouted yet!
  11. How long did you season them for?
  12. I'd cut it smaller and split it sooner, then it'll dry quicker.
  13. Like it. Characterful. Big fan of the these exposed beams inside.
  14. Impressive. How long did that take to build? What happens when a child (or drunk friend etc.) comes along and pulls one log out of the bottom?!
  15. To me at least, a 30" diameter log is pretty big. Perhaps I don't need the largest mill after all! But then - it's only £10 more than the 36" version. Is there any disadvantage to milling a smaller log with a larger mill? As long as your bar is long enough to use the mill at its narrowest setting?
  16. I'm in a similar boat. I messaged the ebay seller and asked about bar length, and apparently all the 3 sizes will work from a 20" bar upward. My only saw has a 16" bar, so I'd need to upgrade my saw anyway - but I think the biggest size mill makes most sense, for the extra few pounds.
  17. Huh, quite a difference, thanks. Was toying with the idea of getting an Alaskan so I can make more use of wood than just firewood in the future. But in reality, I'd probably try it once or twice then never again - so they'd be some quite expensive planks! At £85, it's a lot more tempting...
  18. How much cheaper are they than the Alaskan equivalent? Be interested to hear how it performs. Cheers
  19. I'd be interested to know prices for a fairly standard 750KG box trailer? (Their Web 10 or similar) Also, do you know if they do a box trailer where all 4 sides come off leaving a platform trailer? Thanks.
  20. 75nm is approx 7.5KG force metres. So the difference is the equivalent of putting an extra weight of 7.5KG one metre from the point you're trying to rotate. Not really sure that helps, reading it back!
  21. Plus one. Apple kit is shiny, and does the basics well - but I find it infuriating to do certain things that Windows / Linux / Android do immediately out of the box. (For example, sorting images by date / name - I believe you can get an app to do this, but why on earth should I? I'll decide how to organise my files thanks, not Apple). It's also very over priced for the spec of the underlying hardware. My dad moved from a PC to a Mac laptop, and hates it, finds it very unintuitive.
