firstly, what is the going rate for Elm saw logs? Secondly I may be travelling up to Leicestershire way in a couple of weeks time. Does anybody have anything for sale at sensible prices?

Thats the difference between old and new saws, new saws rev the nuts off to get the chain speed, these old beasts plug along and get the job without burning the fuel so bad.. Now go to the 090 and thats 137cc and a tad more keen on drinking the fuel.

That as may be, my last big log was 39" x 7ft and was getting 4 ot 5 boards.

I mentioned the 070 as a basic weapon, or if you can find the av version or if lucky again an 090. Id rather have torque over speed, if thats of concern just change out for a different sprocket size. I've all three of those, the logs on that picture are 7ft and I was cutting 6 boards before loss of fuel.

Or find an 070, never had issues with fuel filling to be fair and dont really see that as argument. The easiest work around is simply filling once you have got through the cut ?♂️. You generally work out how many boards a tank will cut, so just work back from that ?♂️

Or find an older 064 or 056 depending on size material you are cutting

not sure where to post, but I thought here to start. I've milled some lovely pippy character grade Oak with some lovely crotch feathering, something I've not come across much and a great book match pair. It may be where the timber has layed wet since it was cut, but a line of white fungus appeared, similar to that seen in white rot. These are lovely boards and would hate to see them separate over the drying time. All of the board appears firm and solid except the old sap wood. What can I spray the boards with once they start drying to stop any fungus or is it a case of tough titties ?

Normally sited that an 1"per year air dry prior to kilning. That is what a local kilns religiously sticks to and has a very high success rate. Rush at your peril!

Negative, to far gone with honey fungus. All in rings now awaiting an axe!

Yew is a very stable wood ive found, so ill take the gamble. Board width varies but average 350mm id guess

Depends on the definition of thin, but this board is currently 72 mm thick. He is wanting to divide so he can do a river table on some Burr Yew.

I've a thin board to resaw for a friend, what is the kerf loss on a 3/8 chain please? Wondering if it would be better to get someone to run it down on a bandmill instead, though i am not sure if they would be happy as its been kiln dried about 7 years ago and been indoors ever since ?

On the festool there is an anti kick back block which sits in the track.

Just an update on the blade, I went for the Erbauer 40T blade for £20 and cut down my bed sides cherey materials and was a fantastic finish to the cut, it certainly wouldn't need much finishing if at all.

As noted above depth of cut in general is less than 55mm on majority of track saws. The Erbauer I was going to get was the second deepest of cuts, however initially a festool TS75 was well out of my requirements and cost point, but now I've bought it I have no regrets and I won't be using it every day either.

I've been playing a bit today and mighty impressed. I bought the evolution st2800 track for £60 compared to the ridiculous prices of the festool, dewalt, Makita varieties. Can't see how I lived so long without one and exactly what I needed for running down a live edge on a board. Just ordered a new 210MM panther festool 16tooth ripping blade and will be buying a higher tooth Makita tomorrow from screwfix. Overall love it, certainly an early Xmas present though!!

Looking around last night, it seems that depth of cut comes with a trade off, in that 185x20 is an odd size with only very limited options... Drop down to a 165x20 blade and there are plenty of options and tooth counts. However dropping to a saw with a 165 blade the price increases, or can I run a 165 blade in a 185 machine?
