  1. depends what size your stools are looking at some of the wood, i would use my 41/2lb side axe. see woodsman store or google side axe wil see them on there for smaller ones a yorkshire, or a bill.
  2. just a few photo,s of hedges i have laid all south of England. first two isle of wight championships 3rd old blackthorn hedge been flaild so much was at its end of life but its growing again
  3. reading your post more no as you have done it but try and use your other pleaches to cover if poss other pleaches. when i say leave a lot of branches your brash or all the small twiggy branches this makes good cover for your pleaches and as in other posts aids next spring with a abundance of new growth to make hedge that much thicker. i will try and find some photo,s of hedges i have laid south of england.
  4. hi thanks for close up photo your pleaches look ok and yes that the crooks to hold hedge down i would of left more brash attached to main stems to give a better cover to start and more small wood to get new growth in spring. what you also need to try and do is when you lay the first stem the second and there on lay on top of previous pleach to stop the rain getting on them so much so stop them rotting and the stool left is cut at a angle to allow water to run off so this does not rot. rust this is of help i am still learning myself and if i see a cutter on my travels always stop for a chat and watch them at work can always learn a lot just by looking at there work.
  5. looking at first picture what you had to lay. the hedge you leave a lot of the branches on. you then need to depends on width of trunk eg 6inches start cut 18inches up and go down so leaving a bit of the stem intact the last bit you need to use a axe as a chain saw cuts against grain so can snap off. you should be able to whilst using axe as leaver lower stem down. if its cracking not cut enough. then with devon hedging not done it you use hazel stakes like a hook so one end is longer than other like a tent peg you knock these in which secures hedge on bank. also with this type you leave all the brash on. stand corrected by someone who lays double devon style. but seen it done and it looks good makes a very thick hedge. not much would go through it. if anything
  6. he has a lot of experience with 360,s makes them talk. but it comes down to same thing needs his cpps ticket or blue card to even get a sniff getting on sites then will not take him as he has done plenty of freelance private work but not with any construction firms so is in the same boat. thank you fro contact will get him to give him a bell and see how he gets on may be the opening of the door for him. has his lantra brush cutter ticket and pa1 and pa6 nptc along with me.
  7. looking at bank you could lay a fair bit to make a hedge the taller stuff you could cut down and this may regrow to make more fuel at a later date. but no problem to lay it if you wanted to seen worse
  8. you say banks is this on the edge of fields. and would it be for coppcing for fuel , or do you want it to act as a hedge aswell.is it very wet all the time. latter a mix hawthorn, blacthorn.hazel, others but not sure how they would get on maple, purging buckthorn. i have looked at a hedge which was planted to divide a large field into two. this is very wet and the thorns were struggling to grow to there normal size for age. they were all planted 12 years ago normal thorns would be 10ft plus some of them had only reached 4ft max. on speaking to someone who grows hedging. his views were that they are being starved of oxygen in the root system. and the field needed to be dried out. trust this of a little help.
  9. after been shown a site in italy similar to this site, they had a poll for different size saws.and which makes came top. in this country and on this site, it may be a forgone conclusion who would be the leaders as most users either use Sthil,Husqvarna followed by Echo and other makes. but could there be a witch type section for top saws small saws middle saws and big saws. so star rating for weight, power reliability. ease of use, starting just a few i could think of. would it be a good idear or not.
  10. very interesting there poll for different size chain saws see the sthil and shindawa came top of polls in the 45cc class oleo mac only scored 2% was hoping to see it at the top of the league
  11. just put up a thread re my echo and it came back to me when i had two oleo mac chainsaws cracking saws could not fault them never went wrong just kept going. anyone running new ones and are they as good. if so and as good who sales them. may buy one
  12. thanks for info though i would go for echo as it looked a good saw. i will take it into shed in morning have a look at carb needles and give them a tweek to see if it will start and run any better when its going what a saw. love it its just getting it to run in the first few mins then stay running when i have got it going. did have a oleomac that i could not fault one of the best saws i ever bought. the amount of wood that cut up must of been in the hundred of tonnes never let us down as father in law used it most of the time.did look at getting a new one. but do not know if just as good as old one
  13. off to the 7th then back to 21 hours. been and given quotes for dragon teeth 200 in total re do a drive to a play area. dig a ditch out and relay a section of hedge. have a play area to do to take up plastic mesh and reseat as sunk but to wet to do. could do with more hedges to lay.
  14. carvers and wood turners would like it its what they will give you for it
  15. its the DD38 model ideal for muddy grounds:thumbup:
  16. i know there are local lads on hear from my part and i believe veoli wanted wood chips to go in biomass boilers to make electricity. where taking it for free. as i am short of some to go on grandkids play area so any local tree guys on this site if you have some loads and up towards alresford more than happy to take them many loads as you want.
  17. thank you for all your input he is a cracking worker as he helps me from time to time doing my work and does a lot for a parish council been doing there work for 5 years. he wants to get into the tree game but like all things without the experience and cv,s to vouch for your work its hard to get on ladder. i think he is now looking at going to get his basic cs tickets. and see if he can get even if its just a job now and again at least he can gain expiarance with a profesianal team. and maybe move up the tree to become a climber. sorry for pun
  18. i once mixed red with clean cooking oil in my kubota to see if would be cheaper to run. what a mess had to clean the whole lot out flush with derv to get it to run again will never do it again. re mapping billcar engineering shrewsbury cracking firm and know 4x4,s do a a mapping box you can fit it gives it more grunt less revs so better mpg costs about £350 for box but worth it in the long term. or go to sainsbury buy £60 OF SHOPPING AND GET 10P A LTR OFF saved a fiver today on a £40 fill.
  19. so what would the bare min be for him to gain expiarance to become a fully fledged member of a arb team. he can use a saw even though he does not have the paperwork. he is just trying to decide which way to go. been working for a large landscape company and had very good reports on his work but its gone quite so the seasonal guys got laid off to keep work for the full timers. he was last of the seasonal to be laid off as he was a hard worker. he is hoping they may ask him back in January when they go back. any sugestions eg hourly rate he may be looking at to start from the beginning. and would any tree surgeon take him on as a laborer to start before he gets his tickets
  20. its trying to get it to run when it does idle when warm ticks over nice and then will run up ok its getting to start. and if left even running pull the trigger and it stops or you have to feather it to get it to run up to full revs. taken it to arb shop played with it but did not make much difference. they said it was made for the usa market which is drier and they do not like northern europe weather. find it strange. plug looks ok and have given it a good clean cleaned all the filters out. at a loss
  21. son in law is in a bit of a downer. just been made redundant just before christmas. can not decide to get all his arb tickets to be able to do climbing work. or go and get his blue card to drive 360,s. he is a monkey when he climbs and would be good at it just trying to show hime it may be the way forward to go rather than a 360 which is hard to get into and with all the rain not much around. any veiws. i know it is quite at mo but its between christams and new year.
  22. hi have this saw had it from new. when its running good little saw ideal for most work i need it for. but its a right bitch to get to run from cold. prime it pull the choke out pull it it fires pull it again it splutters into life then dies do this 4 or 5 times when it decides it will run i need to feather it to get it warm to run ok. its other problem is put it down just for a min and pick it up pull trigger and it dies or splutters before going again. i have had it checked no problem found have run it on normal 2 stroke hates it run it on aspen bit better but not good. other saws i had prime pull choke out fires push choke in and away they go and do so all day not this echo. any idears and any other forum member run one. its put me off getting any echo product again.
  23. have a pair of pfanner gladiator 2 a class very good i only work on ground but when i am strimming do not feel anything coming back on legs use them with chain saw and comfortable to wear all day not that bad in in summer do get a bit warm but not uncomfortable. there only downside is this time of year very thin on bum and back of legs and you do feel the cold coming in. also what i like about them has 4 pockets two on each side of hip which zip up so do not loose anything out of pockets and harder to open them by mistake has one on left leg velcro and a zip on on right bum. has very good padding all down front of trousers. use them for hedge laying too and do not get sore knees after laying all day. got them from forest&arb winchester Richard is the man to talk to.i would buy another pair. and not that dear when it comes to chain saw trousers far better than the sthils totally different league
  24. does it have to be just up trees or is this ok picture did not come through properly will try better next time
  25. does it have to be up a tree related or are these within the remit
