  1. when you restore it do not use a angle grinder on it it looses its temper. i use a drimmel with a stone and a fine file then finish of with a canoe stone. i also before i sharpen them use a electric wire brush with a metal polish to bring them up. once finished i run a oily rag over them to stop them going rusty.
  2. hi thanks for that not a name i have heard of but a chap who collects them will. will get his no and give him a bell. the old hooks are so interesting. made so many patterns and some slightly different from other makes. some of the bigger firms took over smaller foundry's and some where just local blacksmiths making them around there forge. have a no of hooks i need to find out there patterns and dates. if i see any hooks at car boots or the like i try and buy them never can have to many.
  3. having looked through old catalog's of bill hooks could not find this wilkinson pattern no. it looks as if it is around the 1940,s age will see if i can find any more details. hate to say what pattern it is based on the devon/hampshire pattern. got gilpins, nash, ewell.other makes stainiforth, brades, all good makes. the no,s they stamped on them was the pattern and part of country they where made for. hence given county names and the job they where intended for. will do some more investigating to find out. the double edge one any make and or no on it
  4. dragon, farm heat are two who make biomass boilers will take cord rape straw, straw pallets. the small one will run 10 radiators. need a acumalator and header tank. looking at £7k for setup but savings in gas or oil makes up for outlay. BFF have a lot on biomass boilers worth a look under renewables
  5. can not read the writing on blade. but it looks old 40/50,s like a yorkshire but with short handle. i use a dremmel with a stone on to bring them up. art is to have no shoulder or not much and finish with a wet stone. should cut paper if drawn through. the old hooks where made using wrought iron and carbon steel in middle. made them flex but hard so did not loose edge. nice hook will take piccys of ours and post. need to give mine a fettle as used it and not looking to good.
  6. seeing granddaughter with her JD tractor with radio, and from in law grandparents MF tractor and trailer learn them young only 2 grandson with his remote control crane good fun. bought wife a pair of neoprene wellies. got a shirt and shooting jacket and a book from in laws 300 beers to try wife and daughter now doing lunch for 14 turkey and goose. had a beer.

  12. as title sugest what billhook do you use. i have more than one but the one i use all the time as it is now tuned is a elwell hampshire/devon pattern made 1945. nice and light an thin have morris. say no more. and a couple of mod pattern to heavy to use shoulder is to thick so sit in shed. also use a elwell 4 1/2 lb side axe so nice to use. and in new year looking to get made a yorkshire. never liked them at first but as time has gone on can see there use between the hook and axe. do have a small grundfos axe nice but going more to the yorkshire.
  13. well if your farm ever needs a hedgelayer to do hedges be more than happy to quote.
  14. my septic tank sunk back in summer due to having a settlement pond dug in woods by me by council. will not take blame for it the tank is now 5ft lower than it should be. so having to install new unit. but pilot holes we dug will not empty still full so it will have to wait untill the ground drys out:laugh1: to be able to dig new hole. then it will be surounded by concrete to stop this going again.
  15. the kanenori near to what i was looking for. but the felco,s yes do good equipment there secateurs are the dogs do da,s the one with the air bottle. saves having to use handle all the time. but there rotary handle does make pruning simple

  18. been a member for a while by a different handle. very good site lots of info and help. very much agg related but it is a farming forum. the workshop and IT site has some very usfull info. since finding this site it leans more towards what i do every day so will use both as have a smallholding and looking to go into livestock on a small scale. as for not getting on never had a problem need to do 15 posts before you get full acess. other member has offered to speak to mods so will let him sort it out for you

  20. have to say using aspen in my echo and husky. my echo on normal petrol is a bitch to get going use aspen and it starts better, runs faster well it looks faster. husky the same. as for fumes never had any when using aspen do with normal 2 stroke. and have a dr walk behind strimmer changed to aspen no fumes at all . did stop using it due to cost but think i will go back to using it. as echo is playing up again.
  21. i was asked to trim a laural hedge back it was 10ft tall and looked fine from outside but was big trunks inside. trimmed it and it was full of rubbish and rats using it spoke to council. clear it. had many people walk by and said thats better. but one who lived behind e mailed his councilor, county council, and his mp. waiting for mfi to turn up to ask me questions why i cut a laurel down. must be of state importance:thumbup:
  22. re rats our pest control guy has giving me the plans to build a rat hotel. 2ftx2ft paving slab or concrete slab 2 course brick all around with a small hole in both ends so they can look right through manhole cover on top. its the big mac of the rat world. just temp them with peanuts to get them to go in. once using swap with bait stations get 6 to 8 in. this lets all the rats get a feed so those not so immune get hit. trouble with normal baiting dominant rats take the lion share rest get whats left so does not give them enough poison to kill them. slaymore seems to work the best at moment but hampshire rats getting immune to most of it now but nutella. and peanut butter works well have to stop to eat so make better target
  23. if still made oregen jacket is protected nice to wear as for price long time since i bought it. sometimes wear it but not much
  24. i have gladiator type A but only on ground so do not need type C did have a pair but looked like Michelin man in them so bulky and job to work in them. my gladiators draw back with them the lining on back is poor get cold back legs in this weather as no lining. and get wet bum and legs. on back. would like a pair with better lining in back. son in law has a pair of Oregon and far better than my gladiators more like trousers but with the protection and better lining in back jacket is good as well
  25. lets have some pictures when done. down your way today went oveer to the gunshop between dorchester and yeovil. son in law got his chameu wellies so he is chuffed. cheap £120 normaly £200. saw a cracking pair of mouflon plus. would like a pair but £200 still be in them all the time. will try and load pictures of hedges we have done
