  2. its water particals in the air which make the moon look as if it has a halo good sign rain is on its way when you see it
  3. very nice the more i see of the carvings the more i want to have a go. looks like i need to book on a course to learn the ropes. anyone do courses hampshire area
  4. as title sugest what billhook do you use. i have more than one but the one i use all the time as it is now tuned is a elwell hampshire/devon pattern made 1945. nice and light an thin have morris. say no more. and a couple of mod pattern to heavy to use shoulder is to thick so sit in shed. also use a elwell 4 1/2 lb side axe so nice to use. and in new year looking to get made a yorkshire. never liked them at first but as time has gone on can see there use between the hook and axe. do have a small grundfos axe nice but going more to the yorkshire.
  5. well if your farm ever needs a hedgelayer to do hedges be more than happy to quote.
  6. my septic tank sunk back in summer due to having a settlement pond dug in woods by me by council. will not take blame for it the tank is now 5ft lower than it should be. so having to install new unit. but pilot holes we dug will not empty still full so it will have to wait untill the ground drys out:laugh1: to be able to dig new hole. then it will be surounded by concrete to stop this going again.
  7. the kanenori near to what i was looking for. but the felco,s yes do good equipment there secateurs are the dogs do da,s the one with the air bottle. saves having to use handle all the time. but there rotary handle does make pruning simple
  8. hi yes not far from me. you in to the tree surgeon piece or do more on the landscape side.
  9. need a good par of loppers, not parrot beak, or anvil want a straight blade on to a straight anvil. liddles do them and cracking tool. but does anyone know where you can get a profesianal pair. looked but all bypass or parrot. want them for cutting hazel top two do not always cut clean and leave tears. any advice please
  10. been a member for a while by a different handle. very good site lots of info and help. very much agg related but it is a farming forum. the workshop and IT site has some very usfull info. since finding this site it leans more towards what i do every day so will use both as have a smallholding and looking to go into livestock on a small scale. as for not getting on never had a problem need to do 15 posts before you get full acess. other member has offered to speak to mods so will let him sort it out for you
  11. hi i know you are a bit far but if you want any stakes and binders be more than happy to supply. and at a good price:thumbup:
  12. have to say using aspen in my echo and husky. my echo on normal petrol is a bitch to get going use aspen and it starts better, runs faster well it looks faster. husky the same. as for fumes never had any when using aspen do with normal 2 stroke. and have a dr walk behind strimmer changed to aspen no fumes at all . did stop using it due to cost but think i will go back to using it. as echo is playing up again.
  13. i was asked to trim a laural hedge back it was 10ft tall and looked fine from outside but was big trunks inside. trimmed it and it was full of rubbish and rats using it spoke to council. clear it. had many people walk by and said thats better. but one who lived behind e mailed his councilor, county council, and his mp. waiting for mfi to turn up to ask me questions why i cut a laurel down. must be of state importance:thumbup:
  14. re rats our pest control guy has giving me the plans to build a rat hotel. 2ftx2ft paving slab or concrete slab 2 course brick all around with a small hole in both ends so they can look right through manhole cover on top. its the big mac of the rat world. just temp them with peanuts to get them to go in. once using swap with bait stations get 6 to 8 in. this lets all the rats get a feed so those not so immune get hit. trouble with normal baiting dominant rats take the lion share rest get whats left so does not give them enough poison to kill them. slaymore seems to work the best at moment but hampshire rats getting immune to most of it now but nutella. and peanut butter works well have to stop to eat so make better target
  15. if still made oregen jacket is protected nice to wear as for price long time since i bought it. sometimes wear it but not much
  16. i have gladiator type A but only on ground so do not need type C did have a pair but looked like Michelin man in them so bulky and job to work in them. my gladiators draw back with them the lining on back is poor get cold back legs in this weather as no lining. and get wet bum and legs. on back. would like a pair with better lining in back. son in law has a pair of Oregon and far better than my gladiators more like trousers but with the protection and better lining in back jacket is good as well
  17. lets have some pictures when done. down your way today went oveer to the gunshop between dorchester and yeovil. son in law got his chameu wellies so he is chuffed. cheap £120 normaly £200. saw a cracking pair of mouflon plus. would like a pair but £200 still be in them all the time. will try and load pictures of hedges we have done
  18. what style will you be laying south of england or dorset/devon.
  19. go on local coppicing group bound to be one in your area. there be one who can supply stakes and binders. normaly 50p each if you get them for less then well done if more. less for doing hedge. what style you laying are you doing midland as you are up in that area for it. nice to see if you want some good hedging plant murry mcclean abingdon very good plants
  20. nice to see a bit on hedgelaying there is a good society if over kent way South of england hedgelayers do a lot of work east sussex. have 3 training days per year and a improvers day but you can keep going just to keep hand inhave some very good cutters. supreme champions and nat champions in there group. have not been down this year as surrey hedge layers nearer to me. was shown root laying last time we laid a hedge some so old and brittle so we root laid it not a quick job but did a good job. need to keep the art of laying alive does the hedge good good for wildlife and good to keep stock in. have the isle of wight championships next feb. came 3rd this year first comp. so try and win next year. but have son in law and friend going so they will be out to beat me. 40 cutter this year novice open and team not normally seen in comps
  21. been looking at your pics and what you do similar to what i do for the rural parishes around stockbridge hampshire. as i am over near winchester. i have to say the jobs you have shown i enjoy apart from the needle game. yet to find any. if i do have to leave and call parish and police to sort out. do a play area and find a lot of baloons with top cut off use them to snort noss. so local beat officer informed me so wary now when clearing up. do you lay any hedges. the blackthorn you cut back looked a good hedge to lay. the dr is the string version or blade have the string just need to get new head as bearings gone the bcs are good machines. what i like about them you can get different attachments one being a chipper to go on it.
  22. nice job field paths look a lot like the ones i have been doing waiting for tiger to pop its head out:laugh1: the mower you are using what make is it and is it good. save me a lot of time using strimmer. hope to have a lot more next year. re rubbish is it in a parish if so inform the parish chairman soon get sorted.
  23. get yourself a baffle to put on top of chimmney this should stop back drafts when wind is in a certain direction also helps with the draw from fire up chimney. also when you light it are all the vents open to make a draft. i use newspaper about 4 balls then put kindling wood on top and light it and let it roar. then put on logs. i have also found my logs are under cover but with so much damp they are not bone dry so bringing in more and dry them by woodburner.
  24. only live about 5 miles from college and a lot of lads doing tree work around hear did there courses there. did a cracking job of a 80ft beech tree i had to cut down and all lowered by rope due to pipeline under tree. have some very good teachers. heard it is one of the top ones for arb courses
  25. if you get a kettle learnt the hard way. i now have sweet bags with a small piece of fire lighter in with small dry kindly wood. just put in bottom light it and away it goes, then just feed it with twigs to keep going, also piece of tin to put at back of it if wind is blowing just stops it blowing it out. but it will boil 5 cups of drink in 2 mins faster than a normal kettle. so it does sometimes boil water before the bacon is cooked. i just use the burning pan to cook on. works just as well. worth buying one only £50. as for hedge laying looks like we have a hedge with a fried to lay 100mtrs. and laid 15mts for a council so bus stop could go in now wants some more laid so word of mouth is better than advertising. what do you pay for your stakes and binders. i was paying 50p each for them but as i have 20 acres of hazel cut my own. want to have a go at devon style looks good for on top of bank. but like the welsh style.
