Side mounted surface grinder then, so you should be ok to use it on your slow set up, before you use it though just to be safe do a "ring test" by holding it through the centre and gently tapping it with a file handle, if it rings like a bell its ok if it is more of a dull sound then it has some kind of flaw or worse a crack.

Sounds like its a centre less wheel to be used for grinding cylinders. You should be ok using it at slow speed if its just to sharpen your chisels. This might help. I was planning on turning the box down to remove the splits to see what was left, pretty sure I can make a few out of them though.Like you say its hard to find decent kits that are a bit different.

You would be ok to use one on the outside of the bowl, but never on the inside.

Dont import one from the states, the chargers work on a different frequency (hz) and they slowly burn out when used over here.

You would be better buying single tools off ebay, Record power are reasonable ones to start off with, a 3/8" or 1/2" bowl or spindle gouge can be used for most jobs. a parting tool and a roughing gouge would also be useful. If you feel brave enough also consider a skew chisel, it can be a bit hard to master but once you do its a very versatile tool. [ame] [/ame]

If you cant get one try an engineering suppliers and ask for tool making springs that are used to make press tools.

I think he wanted to know how to get old photo's on the computer. You would need to scan them in.

Those are very good industrial blades used mainly on production lines. I used to sharpen ones that were used to cut up to 6 sheets of 18 mm mdf / mfc . Sharpened correctly they would last up to a month on a 8 hr days use . Reducing bushes are available so they will fit different saws.

If you only have a faceplate to screw the blank to, the best way to turn a bowl is to shape the outside and leave a spigot the depth of the screws plus 5mm that hold it to the faceplate then part it off and sand it by hand, this is after you have formed the inside of the bowl. Make sure you use good screws though as you dont want them to shear off whilst turning. If its your first time turning I think you would be better off to try a smaller piece first, a 15 - 16 inch blank can cause a lot of pain and damage if it flies of at speed.It would also be wise to hold the blank with the tailstock pushed up to give it more support.
