1. One of the lads I work with has managed to cut his hand quite badly with a hedge cutter. He won't / shouldn't be at work for at least 6 weeks. (Don't ask!) Makes yer/me think! I am considering personal accident insurance? Can I afford it? I am involved in Forestry and Arb type work including climbing. What would I expect to pay for what cover? Any companies particularly good or bad when it comes to needing to claim? Thoughts please D
2. I need to organise a power shut down to remove a tree in the Eden valley Cumbria. Does anybody have the contact details for the appropriate utility people? TIA David
3. Eddie... Tried to buy 5 litres today and local dealer says they probably won't be stocking anymore. Just as I thought I'd. Give it a serious go. :-( Who stocks it in The Kendal to Penrith area now?
4. If your sure its dangerous, and you have posted here in a public forum I think you would be wise to inform them that you think there is a serious risk and recommend they reassess the situation. I would suggest you do this in writing keeping a copy for your own records. It doesn't need to be complex. If you do that, the worst thing that can happen from your perspective is that you can say you warned them. If you don't they may well want to know why you didn't. That may carry a risk for you. Keep it it kind, supportive and encourage them to think.
5. I had a couple of days work last week in the big city. Got talking to some SRTbased window cleaners. At their work rate, the petzl id lasts about 3 months. They use a lift in the building to get up and abseil down.
6. MY brother in law has in the last couple of weeks bought a MT-9999 from one of our travelling friends. Hmmmmmm, It looks like a poor build quality Stihl copy. Has anybody come across these? Build quality isn't great but is it good enough/safe enough to put petrol in it? Thoughts please
7. I am going to Arb show on Saturday as an Arb Association member but with no ticket. Is it the case that I just need a members benefit card to get in free or have I missed something? Thanks David
8. I need a LOLER inspection sorting for one persons climbing kit. Ideally between Carnforth and Penrith? Thanks David
9. Me too thread! I always try and keep me phone in my left trouser pocket. Keys and coins in right. That way the screen seems to survive quite well and I usually (providing I know where my trousers are) know where it is. My phone is currently being repaired after a soaking up a tree about two weeks ago. Making do with an Aldi waterproof and dustproof phone at the moment. Good points include massive standby time, duel sim. Bad points, won't connect to hands free equipment, camera is dreadful and no internet access. It's an option. D
10.

Hi Steve, not sure about Forum policy on this?

There may well be a few people looking for LOLER inspectors, how about a thread that can act as a directory? Who are you? Where are you? What do you charge?

Can see its asking for people to advertise and that may conflict with other advertisers.

Thoughts please?

Happy to post the question.

11. Ask questions and enjoy the challenge. I've been on courses where participants do as little as they can get away with. Do the opposite! Get as in much practice as you can, seek feedback and observe others. Have fun and stay safe.
12. Whilst not a 'chainsaw' specific I have found these to be good for climbing and lighter work. Guide 54 Gloves Gustharts
13. Many thanks everybody. Job is sorted but it would seem that timber haulers are busy at the moment.
14. I am looking for a couple of people who can quote for haulage of timber from the South Cumbria/North Lancs area. Any contacts? Thanks David
15. Can somebody post a photo of a good neck elastic set up please? Just starting to use SRT in trees. Done loads in caves and interested in how and why the set ups are different.
16. My pb for fuel consumption with the 550 is to walk onto site with 5 litres and run out in the afternoon doing lots of light scrub and small tree clearance. might have been better with a clearing saw?
17. RE forwarding was done by Sam at Hanafins. M D Hanafin & Sons Ltd
18. Many thanks to all replies. I will get responses out later today when I get a chance to meet up with my business partner. Steve, I am aware that I may have "stepped out of line" with this post in by not being on the register. I will have a look at your post re advertising and sort it. Please accept our apologies. I think this is a great forum and want to support it.
19. We have more firewood than we are likely to need for our customers so are looking to sell a few wagon loads. Mixed Hazel, Silver Birch, Oak, Sycamore etc. All hardwood. It was cut in Jan/Feb 2014 and is stacked roadside. The Arnside store (lower) set of photos on the website below. https://sites.google.com/site/davidwaincountrysidecontracti/firewood-and-timber-photos
20. I use alsorts of saws. If just picking one for day of light felling/nature reserve stuff I would nearly always take my husky 550. With a sharp chain it will cope with occasional bigger stuff and it is light for using all day. I currently use a 13inch bar on it. With reduction cuts its pretty impressive what it rings up. I also have a 560 with an 18 inch bar but often don't bother swapping unless there is a fair bit to do. I actually think the pro level saws husky or styihl are good value. In the long term you'll spend more on chains, bars, fuel etc. Only downside of the huskys In my experience is they are a bit more temperamental to start. Apart from that I prefer em. Good luck it comes down to budget and personal preference in the end. Also good to have a local quality dealer.
21. We will have a tired Hilux for sale soon. Good chassis, reliable engine and gear box and blue. I have no doubt it will require TLC for next MOT it always does!!! Not a straight panel on it but it is/has been a work horse. Its in Cumbria. If your not shy of welding and generally fixing things it might suit you. Interested?
22. Wish him and his mates a full recovery.... There for the grace of god and all that. People make mistakes.... It is interesting that a massive lump has hit him. Would be good to hear a quality description of how it happened and take the learning.
23. I recently started climbing at 50. Age is not the problem. So far the biggest problem seems to be the music the younger lads want on the van radio! Chatting to my climbing and chainsaw assor he suggested that climbing is the last place for reprobates that have had alsorts of other jobs and have now found something they enjoy.
