  1. I love Becky Falls. Did a survey in there whilst it was shut to the general public so had a day wandering around in there on my own looking at the trees. Happy days.
  2. Thanks for this. I will see what Spud says. Where abouts in Devon are you? I am down that way this week doing a few woodland surveys on Dartmoo, sort of in between Bovey Tracey and Moretonhampstead.
  3. Scored piston. Will probably send it to spud on here and see what he can do with it.
  4. Took down this macrocarpa the other day and will probably have a go at milling up some of the smaller bits with my 36" Alaskan but that will have to wait until my 394XP is repaired. The owner is keen for the larger lumps to be removed from the garden sooner rather than later and if anyone was interested in milling it up and taking it away, they could have it for free from near Dorchester, Dorset. It will be ringed up for firewood otherwise.
  5. The leaves around the stem don't looked like turkey oak as normally more triangular lobes. I think it is possible that turkey oak can hybridise with our native oaks, just to confuse things further.....
  6. Did you get any photos of the buds as they usually have scales on them that make them appear 'hairy'. If it is Turkey oak the timber is prone to ring shake and generally no good for milling.
  7. Looks like Turkey Oak bark with the Orange hue in the fissures.
  8. I don't know if I am hijacking the theme of this thread but would people mind telling me who designed their website and how much it cost (one off payment only or regular payments?) I have just bought my domain from vista print as you can't see my photos in the gallery on a lot of smart phones/tablets or even some desktops and SEO is poor (AG Tree Services) and am looking to have another one built. Any advice from those who have been through web design would be greatly appreciated as my vistaprint was a simple drag and drop with limited choice. I am now being asked about web hosting, e commerce, how many months SEO to go for and its overwhelming my small brain!
  9. Lloyds are the same with me, although they gave me first 18 months free of any charges.
  10. Downsides of being limited is that my accountancy bill increased by around 50% and I was forced to open a business bank account where they charge me for PAYING IN MONEY !!
  11. Biggest pro is that your own possessions (house, car etc) are completely separate from the business when you are a limited company so should somebody decide to sue you, these cant be taken into account whereas they can be if you are a sole trader.
  12. Totally agree. This is a great place to share knowledge and imo people shouldn't be sniped at for asking. If people have nothing helpful to say maybe it's best for them to say nothing at all. Just my opinion.
  13. Never made anything out of wood before and not really got the right tools but the Mrs has been nagging me so thought I'd have a go. Think I've got the bug now .....
  14. No I didn't but my mobile number is 07403 944331 if you wanted to give me a call?
  15. I have 28m3 of sweet chestnut in Dorchester cut last winter in 2m lengths. £45 per ton if interested PM me.
  16. I bought my last saw (560XP) of Radmore and Tucker online and when it went wrong my local husky dealer did repair work under warranty.
  17. I know of someone locally who died of carbon monoxide poisoning from a poorly fitted stove so think carefully about saving yourself £500-£600 on installation fees!
  18. I don't think a signature would be any help imo as anyone can sign anything so what does a bit of paper prove? For all the real owner knows, you could have made this bit of paper up and signed it yourself. I think he was done by a scamster and if I'm honest, I would've probably been no different. I would however agree that it's unfair to assume the travelling community are responsible without any substantive proof. Thanks for the warning anyway, I will now be wary of any call outs which don't quite feel right and maybe question them a bit more than I would normally have done.
  19. I have approx 28m3 of sweet chestnut firewood in 2m lengths roadside in Dorchester, Dorset (DT2 8QE). Various Diameters from 7cm - 60cm. Cut last winter. Access is via a chalk farm track and last 400m needs to be reversed down. We have had arctics in and I can give contact details for the company used. £45 per tonne - please pm me if interested.
  20. I milled some beech into 2" planks as a first attempt with my Alaskan mill and thought I would make a simple bench out of it for my father-in-law as he keeps asking for one. I was going to treat it with fungicide then oil it but I know beech is prone to swelling then shrinkage (more than some other species!) causing excessive splitting so is it worth me making anything for outside with this beech?
