  1. Really helpful links, thanks. Didn't realise you can get tiles through mapmaker.
  2. I use Map Maker (free) to create maps for felling licenses but the digital mapping tiles I buy from OS MasterMap are between £25 and £45 each. I am thinking that there must be a cheaper way of doing this digitally without going down the route of requesting paper maps from the FC and drawing boundaries on them. Thanks in advance
  3. Those Kania traps are meant to have a tunnel legally, are they not?
  4. Acer negundo - yes just looked it up. I think you are spot on there thanks.
  5. My Roger Phillips Trees in Britain may be misleading as it shows red autumnal foliage but I've just looked online and it shows Persian Ironwood (Parrotia persica) with yellow autumnal leaves.
  6. I thought this might have been ironwood but owner assures me it doesn't go red in autumn. Can anyone help ID it? Thanks in advance
  7. I love the fact that about 55 cases of A&E cases a year were attributable to being struck by trees, whereas 2200 per year relating to Wheelie bins (taken from Common Sense Risk Management of Trees). You don't see many wheelie bins needlessly destroyed as someone has over-evaluated the risk they pose and yet this happens with trees all the time.
  8. I would love clarification on this. Recently had leylandii in an area TPO. Was historically managed as a hedge but not for about 15 years. Sent picture to the tree officer and he said it's a hedge and exempt from the TPO! I was pleased I didn't need an application but also wanted a definitive answer for when this exemption applies.
  9. I am thinking this is a manna ash. I wanted to wait until the fruits are on it to help id it but the owners want an answer now. Can anyone help with a definite id. Thanks in advance.
  10. Loved reading this thread based on half truths portrayed by the press who love to see England fans 'rioting'. A few FACTS from someone currently still in Marseille and about to travel to Lens. Organised local youths have enticed congregations of England fans by throwing bottles on the two nights prior to the match. The English have retaliated and this has been filmed, photographed and shown around the world. The police then moved in with the tear gas whilst the youths scarper. Again the press have a field day. I was in the old port in Marseille on match day from 0830 and saw absolutely no violence from the thousand of England fans. It was a carnival atmosphere until around 5pm when around 200 Russian 'ultras' charged fans from a side street. Most fans didn't know what was happening until it was too late. They were largely dressed in black with Russian writing and faces covered. They attacked all within hitting distance, wether your a hooligan or a proper fan. One fan, who has been in the press with the black eye and portrayed as a hooligan, was actually attacked and mugged by Russian fans. He was due to go on to the next game but has decided to go home as his trip has been ruined. After the game there were no taxis anywhere. England fans were stranded in Marseille, a city with a history of football related violence. Local youths in there hundreds were attacking us. We ended up paying a local 80 euros to drive us the 15 miles to our camp site just to get out of the city and away from the trouble. We were tear gassed several times before the game as this is the police's method of moving crowds on, regardless of what you are doing. England fans are not angels. They are a target and there is a minority who are intent on causing violence. This is true of many nations. You may term me as just another English hooligan. I am actually Scottish, have lived in England half my life and came because I love the atmosphere of big tournaments.
  11. It's **** mate. I've just had a log splitter and trailer nicked from a farm. They drove straight through 2 fences to get away with them and we only found out when cows got out onto a busy A road. Second time I've been done in 9 months. Alarms and chains don't stop them. Neither do fences!
  12. No. We put over 20 of them up about 18 months ago. We were baiting them with peanuts or peanut butter in woodland riddled with squirrels and caught nothing! Bring back the license for warfarin!
  13. A builder always charges extra for unforeseen problems. Why should I be out of pocket. If the fencer told me before hand that I would have to pay more for stoney ground, I would understand. I'd want to see it for my own eyes though! Thought my fellow arborists would be more understanding on this.
  14. They were all huge trees. We were having to use bars between 3ft and 5ft on an MS880 so not sure how else we could have cut them up really and they were full of stuff from years ago. One we even got a forwarder to come and take away in 8 ft lengths but had to cut the stem sections in sixth's for him to be able to lift. We just kept hitting and blunting. Very frustrating.
  15. Branches on downy birch generally ascend whereas silver birch droop hence the Latin name 'pendula'. hybridisation is a real problem with identifying them though.
  16. I've been really lucky that in the 6 years since I went it alone, we've had no problems with metal/stone in trees. That was until about 3 months ago. Unfortunately in the last few months I have had 3 incidents where the trees have been riddled with the stuff. So much so that one job it put half a day on it, one job it added a day and a half (it was an 8ft diameter beech) and another job it added a day. On these occasions I have had to take the hit financially as I price by the job, not a day rate. I now need to write a condition into my quoting to cover such events, as I can't keep taking such a financial hit, but I'm not really sure how to structure it. I wondered how others in the industry were tackling this sort of thing? Thanks in advance, Alan
  17. Horrible to hear of yet another theft. Arborisk were brilliant with my claim earlier in the year when I had £6k worth of saws etc taken. The down side is my premiums went up a massive 50% at renewal because of the claim (even though I challenged the massive hike in price) so we end up paying for those robbing ba*****s in many ways. I too was helped out by local arborists who loaned me kit until I sorted myself out. There are some good uns out there.
  18. I'm in Dorset (near Dorchester) and manage woodland for various woodland owners. Have you considered having a management plan written? There's grants available so may not even cost you a penny. Call me on 07403 944331 and I will advise you as best I can. Will probably be able to pop out and have a look some time.
