  1. Like all woodland management I would say to identify the key features of the woodland and to implement management to protect and enhance them. This needs to be linked to the aims and objectives of the management of the woodland, be it conservation, timber, recreation etc. Don't know if this helps ?!
  2. It looks like Kretzschmaria to me. Not a good sign.
  3. You're only just up the road from me so I give me a shout when you've made some more and I will have one (with a handle please)
  4. I'm keen to know the price too?
  5. A bit later than planned but here are a few photos of the oaks. They are around 50-60cm over-bark mid diameter and mostly between 2m and 4.5m long. Any more thoughts?
  6. I am guilty of not putting my kit on arbsafe even though I was cleared out 6 months ago. I should do it I know. It's something I have been meaning to do and haven't got round to - piss poor I know. Even if I had registered my stuff before it was stolen (£6k worth of saws, blowers etc) the old bill wouldn't have got em back as they didn't even bother to take a list of what was nicked!
  7. Thanks Big J. I didn't manage to get pictures today but will post some on here as soon as I can.
  8. We will have an arctic load of fairly low quality oak sawlogs. The trees are mainly 60-80cm diameter over bark and 3m plus in length. Not all are unbranched although there are a couple of nice straight clean stems amongst them. We have been offered £45 a m3 roadside by a cabinet maker for them which is the same money we have been getting for firewood. I'm not sure what best to do with these. Should I take the cabinet makers offer? Should I sell as a whole parcel and hope to get a bit more? Or should I split up the logs into parcels depending on the quality and sell this way? I will try and post photos later today.
  9. Been back in the dry and taken some more photos of the leaves and fruit. I am now thinking the bark and fruit look hawthorn like ??!!
  10. Can anyone help identify this tree/shrub. All my ident books are packed away in storage whist we have our house renovated and its annoying me because I recognise it and have trawled the internet but can't put a name to it. Apologies for the poor quality photos! This has an abundance of red berries according to the owner that the birds love. Thanks in advance Alan
  11. I have a haglof hypsometer which is brilliant, quick and easy to use (except on heavy rain!) but very pricey.
  12. I know this was an old thread but I need a contact for John Mcdermott, does anyone have a number as a google search only comes up with this thread!
  13. http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=90508 this may be of interest? Hopefully this link to another thread works ........
  14. In my experience, it depends on the TO. The LPA have the power to apply a TPO if 'it is expedient in the interest of amenity to make the provision for the preservation of trees'. IMO nobody can decide on the amenity value (or potential) of any trees without seeing it and even then it is subjective. My first port of call would be to discuss this with the Tree Officer and also with the landlord (now we know it's tenants) and hopefully one of them will get a result. Whilst I agree these people shouldn't be able to get away with hacking at your tree, I also agree that you may have to throw a hell of an amount of money at it to try and get a prosecution (not to mention time or stress). This may or may not be the way you choose to proceed. At the end of the day, all the arborists on here are trying to offer helpful advice and after taking it all into consideration, only the OP can decide on the best course of action for them.
  15. What about speaking to your local tree officer to ask if they will put a TPO on the tree (explain the circumstances) so that if happens again, the council can prosecute?
  16. Can you detail exactly what someone has allegedly done and what area it allegedly happened in with no names mentioned?
  17. Is everyone speaking in riddles here? If someone has carried out a crime and been convicted surely that is fact and can be posted on here??
  18. I am advertising this for a client: 128m3 of small diameter Sycamore (approx 75%), beech (approx 15%) and ash (approx 10%) available near Blandford, North Dorset (DT11 9). Cut April/May this year and extracted to a corner of a field which has a gated access from the main road so arctic access is possible, whilst ground is dry. Sizes are 20" down to 3.5". Estate are asking for £45 per ton plus VAT. Anyone interested can PM me, email me on [email protected] or phone me on 07403 944331 (please leave a message if I am unable to answer and I will get back to you). Alan
  19. Unfortunately I wont see the bloke ever again. Just happened to be on his land doing a survey on behalf of the FC and he approached me so thought I would use Arbtalk to put him in touch with some people from his area who could help. Maybe the person who does get the call from him will post on here??
  20. Thanks to all those that posted a reply and sent a PM. I passed on all of the details and its up to him now to chose somebody to do the work!
  21. Would love to join in and say how my 550 and 560 are performing ..... But the 18 month old 560 has been in the repair shop for 6 weeks getting a new crank shaft and while it was in there my 6 month old 550 was stolen. Loved to use both saws but fed up with the reliability issues with both. If husky could sort that it would be a no brainer when choosing saws. As it is, I've just bought Stihl 362, 461 and 881 even though I've always had huskies in the past.
  22. I am on a farm today between Chepstow and Abergavenny and the owner wants a forestry agent to sort a felling license and to then oversee the thinning/extraction/marketing of timber. It's too far away from my patch to warrant coming back to do it. He has around 200 acres of plantation/woodland. Anyone interested PM me and I will pass on your details. Thanks, Alan.
  23. It's gutting mate. They seem to be targeting tree surgeons, landscapers etc all the time these days.
  24. Yeah, being done over definitely gives you the kick up the arse to spend more on security to make it harder for them.
