1. I saw this on the on the stump of a windblown Norway Spruce straight after I had cut it. I was guessing that this might be incipient decay but wasn't sure so thought I would ask for advice on here. I would love to hear thoughts on what it is, which it is the shape that it is (something to do with compartmentalisation and the medullary rays?) Thanks Alan
2. Really hacked at by the owner then the tree surgeon gets called in thinking we have a magic wand to repair the damage! I was thinking prunus because of the 2 glands at the base of the leaf so glad to hear I was along the right line. Any advice for treating aphid (I think!) infestation?
3. I agree that the leaves are very goat willow like but not the small green fruits shown in a couple of the pictures
4. Sorry, now I'm trying to figure out how to add the images !!
5. Can anyone help firstly identify this tree (apologies for the poor pictures) and the symptoms which started a week or so ago as brown patches on the leaves and have developed to shot holes. On the underside of the leaves through a hand lens are light green coloured nymphs which I was guessing were an aphid?? I am trying to identify the tree species so that I might be able to identify the pest and finally find a treatment which might help. According to the owner, this is the 3rd year running that this has happened. Any help would be much appreciated.
6.
If you are still looking for some Yew branch wood, we cut some about October time and it is stacked in Milton Abbas, Dorset if your interested?

7. Excuse my naivety but does 'brown oak' come from a specific species of oak and is it caused by our old fungi friends?
8. Thanks Mart and to the others who replied. I am sure one of the contacts I now have will do the job nicely.
9. Is any one interested in extraction in Dorchester, Dorset. In total we will have around 125 m3 of sweet chestnut, 20 m3 of norway spruce and 20 m3 of oak, plus cords of branchwood for firewood. Ground too wet at the moment for extraction so we have stopped felling but hopefully we will be ready in the next couple of months, as long as the rain lets up! Anyone interested please PM me and we can arrange a site visit.
10. and she ended up having 6 logs coming out of 5 trees all marked for thinning so it worked out well.
11. She was happy to pay the £4 per hoppus foot and said that seemed about the going rate, so thanks for all the advice.
12. I have an area to fell that has a badger sett amongst it. I am looking at whether I need an additional licence to carry out operations in this area as stated in the FC Guidance 9 document (http://www.forestry.gov.uk/PDF/fcpg9.pdf/$FILE/fcpg9.pdf). I think I will be fine if I don't fell between Dec-Jun as although I plan to winch the timber out of the 20m exclusion zone I wouldn't class it as heavy timber (approximately 10" dbh and upto 8' long). Can anyone offer any further advise on these applications? Also, is there guidance for heavy horses extraction on badger setts? Anyone know if this is permitted within the 20m exclusion zone?
13. I was hoping somebody may be able to advise me. I have an artist who makes carvings etc out of wood and wants to buy a sawlog from the woodland I having started to manage. The tree is still standing but is 46cm at dbh and the timber height is 3.9m giving a volume of 1.03 m3. Obviously some of this will be lost due to the felling cut. What sort of price do oak sawlogs go for per m3 or tonne?
14. As I cut wood for a living and occasionally mill it up for selling, my wife has decided that she would like to start making things out of wood for a hobby (to start with!). She is thinking of things that appear simple such as chopping boards and tea light holders (these may not be as simple as they appear!). The questions I have is what is the best tool for cutting out these out of the boards that I have (scrollsaw?) and how do you drill the holes for tea lights to leave a flush finish as the auger and flat bits I have obviously leave a hole in the centre deeper than the cut I am after. I am very happy that my wife is finally showing an interest in what I do. Its only taken 8 years! My kids took to it more naturally and absolutely love the pole lathe and the shavehorse. Any other advise anyone would like to give would also be appreciated, such as simple things to make for beginners, useful books etc.
15. Being new to the industry, I wondered what sort of figure per m3 or tonne that hardwood is going for roadside for firewood, particularly in the south west - Dorset, Devon, Cornwall, Somerset, Hampshire etc). Anyone willing to give an idea of current prices?
16. I am about to sell my first logs by volume for firewood and fencing materials. I am happy with how to measure the stack when it is roadside to know what the volume is but do I then need to take air spaces into consideration? If so, how is this done? Any help would be appreciated.
17. I don't suppose anyone knows of a conversion rate of weight (tonnes) to volume (m3) for sweet chestnut when green (freshly felled)? I am looking through my many forestry books but have found nothing as yet, nor have I on internet searches, so I hoped by throwing it out there to the knowledgeable people on this forum, I might get somewhere. Its the age old problem of seller wishing to sell by volume but buyer wishing to buy by weight.
18. The Urea turned out to be a real pain to get hold of, maybe it is going out of fashion?? I got the urea from a company found online, based in Northern Ireland called Mistral Chemicals (urea | Mistral Lab Supplies). It came in a crystal form and I mixed it at a rate of 2kg of urea to 10 litres of water in a napsack sprayer and coated the stumps with it straight after felling.
19. Don't worry bikewoo your comments are appreciated. Had to be petrol splitter for me as no electric in either sites I need it for. Bought the Titan pro 10 ton splitter today as they are a local company to me and I was able to have a play with one before buying. It seems adequate for my needs. I will post again when I have got it and put it through its paces.
20. Half of it is firewood, the other half fencing materials. One local company is knocking out kiln dried logs at £160 a m3 and they are selling!
21. Sold 70 m3 at £50 per m3 and lots of interest in rest that is left so hoping I can prove you wrong on this one.
