Chopping Board From Spalted Beech and Alder

My wife wanted to have a go at making simple chopping boards for friends and family out of some spalted beech and alder boards that I have. I was talking to someone at the Stock Gaylard Oak Fair and they said not to use spalted wood for chopping boards due to the fungal mycelium and bacteria in the wood, but I have seen many made and sold from spalted wood at this show and similar shows. Can you treat the wood with something human friendly first to kill any nasties or does anyone have any advice on this subject? Thanks, Alan

<p>Hi, a customer has arranged a 6-wheeler from Yeovil (David 01935 388300) to collect 13 ton from the logs stacks in the next week. It may be worth you speaking to him as this is my first time selling timber and all other customers have arranged there own haulage. The track is chalk and is wide enough for an artic but they would need to revers around 400m down it as there is no turning area. It is certainly no worse than FC tracks that I have seen artics use to collect logs. Are you local as you could come and see it?</p>

Have sold 42m3 of this but have extracted a load more. Currently around 50m3 available roadside and still 40-50 m3 to come out Looking for £45 per m3 / £45 per ton. -
Cut out a 2.4m log and no sign of this there, just where it was cut off the stump.

I have 32m3 of sweet chestnut in 2m lengths available roadside in Dorchester, Dorset, DT2. This was cut between December 2013 and February 2014. More will be available in next 2 months that was cut April/May 2014. Would prefer to sell by volume at £45 per m3. Diameters vary - see photos.

We have approx 24.5 m3 of norway spruce in 2.4m lengths available roadside in Dorchester, Dorset (DT2 8EZ). Diameters vary -see photo as P66 but left unmanaged until now.

Would those knowledgeable in this area think that 30% is a fair amount to allow for air space in a stack of norway spruce such as this?

I put it in my local husky dealers and they said to replace the whole thing. Probably because they couldn't be bothered to take it apart and thought they would try and get £100 out of me for a whole new assembly!

The 257 was given to me so don't know the year and I will contact the eBay seller to see if I can find out what year the 262XP was that the part is coming off.

Does anyone know if the clutch cover/chainbrake assembly from a husky 262 xp (part number 503 70 42 - finishing on eBay Saturday night) is likely to fit my 257 (part number 503 74 70-72) as it has been advertised as for 257/261/262 - thanks.

Whitebeam would definitely do well on chalk. Anyone know about crab apples susceptibility to grey squirrel damage as I know this does ok on chalk too?

I like the idea of Wild Service but don't see too many around Dorset, only really on the areas of london clay so not sure how it would do on this chalk site. Anyone know?

We cut a load of sweet chestnut in Dorset, over chalky soil, in December and January and just went back to extract it as it was too wet earlier in the year and about 70% has split into 4. We didn't really crash them across other logs so not convinced this is felling related, especially on the scale it is in - Someone suggested it is the soil type???? Or maybe the drying has to be slowed/controlled in some way to prevent this??? Has anyone come accross this or can anyone offer any thoughts/advice? It was originally going for a mixture of fencing materials, saw logs and firewood but it will now probably mostly go for firewood now with a small quantity possible salvageable for cleft rails. Thanks

I have to plant two native trees in a smallgarden which is on the edge of woodland and is rife with our old foe the grey squirrels (is there anywhere safe?!!). Does anyone have any suggestions for native trees which these blighters may leave alone? Thanks
