I already have a 550xp I can use for roughing so just in need of a detailing saw. Shall probs give the 192 on the bay a miss then as look for a 181 or similar. Thank you for the input

Hello everyone, I have recently started carving and a really enjoying it so have been looking into getting a carving saw but cannot decide what to get so looking for suggestions as to what to get please. If I get in there quick I could get an ms192c off ebay, what are these like and will it be fit for purpose? Thanks in advance George

So it was Sunday morning and its a lovely day so I thought I'd post my self a shandy and have a go at carving and 2hrs later I have 2 mushrooms and a stool , considering I've never done any I'm pretty pleased with how it's turned out . So what do you guys think? And would you usually leave a ring of bark around the mushrooms or take it off? Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App

In my understanding of it it works like a planning application and locals have the right to object and if the reason for objection is deemed valid work cannot commence

Have ordered some aly plate for the chip box so really light and will have a tidy clean look but am considering some thin ply to line the aly just to keep it nicer for longer

Sadly haven't got as far as I had planned as I had a job come in but I have got the bed mounted on the pivots and the ram mounts on an have the tipper system all ready to go, have got the sides all the structure coming this week so will hopefully look a lot closer to being finished next weekend . I run an 18" occasionally and can honestly say its fine, cuts faster than and copes better than a 341 running a 16" bar. All down to personal preference I think, if you don't fancy running an 18 on the 550 then fair enough but it will run it fine and is still a light and well balanced, that's just my opinion though. If you search YouTube there is a yank running a 562 xp (60cc) with 34" I believe and it works fine.

Recently done both mine too and all I can say is take your time! there's no great rush so be methodical and take time to think and remember what you've been tought, there a breeze . Keep confident and best of luck fella

That's some great info thank you , will definitely get all the steel painted befor fitting the aluminium. Have ordered the sheets now and at a good price . Getting them from the fad shop my brother works at, 4 2x1m sheets @ 1.5mm comes to £137 and after cutting to fit will only weigh approx 22-25kg

Hopefully later on today, I should have the ram mounted and plumbed in by then also have the boards on and got some aluminium on order for the chip box sides

Will take all that into consideration thanks Peter an thanks for your input. Had thought about the planking but can't seem to find anywhere to get it from, does anyone know where I can get it from and a rough price for a plank?

As some of you may know I'm currently modding a trailer to suit my needs and I've hit a bit of a wall where the chip box sides are concerned, I had thought about .9mm aluminium plate mounted in a steel frame but have been informed that it'll corrode in no time due to dirt and grime from the road, steel is pretty much out of the question I think due to weight and how long it'll last so I thought I would consult the bible of knowledge that is arbtalk and see what ideas/suggestions other people have, the main criteria is that it must be as light as possible

I may get slated for this suggestion but I would suggest getting a half decent gassles mig with decent quality flux core wire, recently I've been using a Clarke 100amp gassles and can weld really thin stuff with that but can also blow holes through 6mm steel if I wanted too so can weld a good range of stuff, no need for gas contracts and can still wel outside in the wind with no problem

Haha I wasn't trying to provoke anyone, just knew the 550 was quick and wanted to see how it compared to the 60cc stihl, I did feel quite smug though haha

So I recently got some subby work with a local tree services that run stihl's and today decided to pitted my 550xp running an 18" bar against one of their ms341 running a 16" bar, both saws were sharpened by me this morning so would have been as sharp as each other unless the other lad hit something during the day. We both burried our bars entirely into the same ash stem and to my surprise the 550 was on par if not slightly faster than the 341 haha, just thought I would share my findings with you all.

I personally don't think they actually allow you to do anything, there's nothing to stop un qualified people teaching their self and going out and doing the same job, all it is is a certificate to state that you have completed an assessment to prove your competent.
