  1. there are the couple that are actually mahoganies and then there are the ones that too many "think" are mahogany.
  2. well bugger me, after all that it is just a bit of Iroko... didn't look like it from the face of the boards but it just goes to show that you need to see endgrain to be sure... iroko WWW.HOBBITHOUSEINC.COM
  3. you lost then mate...
  4. Mr Devile???? makes me sound like Cruella's husband... i will need a close up of the endgrain sanded to 400g to be sure but i believe this may be one of the Afzelia genus which are hard and tough timbers that have historically been used for flooring. if i was sent a sample i could be 100% sure.
  5. Mark, the monkey puzzle is by definition not a Pine mate. it's an Araucarian. also looking at the books the scots pine is harder than monkey puzzle. Scots Pine | The Wood Database - Lumber Identification (Softwood) WWW.WOOD-DATABASE.COM Monkey Puzzle | The Wood Database - Lumber Identification (Softwood) WWW.WOOD-DATABASE.COM black pine is harder still if it grows near you. Austrian Pine | The Wood Database - Lumber Identification (Softwood) WWW.WOOD-DATABASE.COM cedar of lebanon is a good one for flooring or douglas fir.
  6. i could help but i need to see some wood, not just a random log...
  7. Foookin hell boy. that's a beastie of a tree you had there. count the rings first mate...
  8. just wish i had the money and the space...
  9. only the oak is durable so i would not use the rest for an outdoor BBQ area myself. 40-50mm is fine for milling to but keep a heavy weight on top of the stack to keep them flat whilst they dry.
  10. any chance of some pictures?
  11. if any is dead straight i know of a snooker cue maker who is always on the lookout...
  12. if you could sell some to the UK when dry that would be great. how wide are some of the trees?
  13. don't get me wrong mate i'm not saying it's ok to breath in dist for a laugh i'm simply saying that all dust is pretty much the same when it comes to anything that is grown or can be milled in the UK. one could possibly have an dermatologically allergic reaction to certain trees but that's about it in my view.
  14. i hope everyone realises that they are more likely to get killed by a badly felled tree... toxicity goes around the woodturning forums all the time and i'm yet to have anyone give an example where wood toxicity was a major factor. foliage is a different matter.
  15. i've stopped work myself due to the fact i have a mother in the 70+ bracket who has Diabetes meaning she is at greater risk and the wankers at the joinery where i rent space do jack shit so far as sanitation goes so i'm staying away. i've little work and no money. guess i'd better look into what the government is doing to actually help self employed people...
  16. good to know i'm not the only one who thinks like that...
  17. can't say that i'm a restorer but i do like to get my hands on old furniture and refurbish it. others may say i've ruined some old furniture but i like to think i give it new life. what sort of furniture are you looking to do?
  18. how long are they jon? i might be able to convince my joiner landlord that they would be suitable for his work if he needs some yellow poplar.
  19. my five favorite films are The Shawshank Redemption/Green Mile in equal top. then Chaplin, Anna and the King and last year i saw 2001 space odyssey and it took spot number five from forrest gump. noteworthy mention is Philadelphia...
  20. no, this is european walnut which is usually rather poor compared to other Juglans species...
  21. Yes Andrew it is walnut...
  22. Pinus radiata is a non durable species.
  23. Pinus radiata readily takes preservative treatments but in my opinion that amount of large trees should be used for cutting into joinery timber. try getting in contact with big sawmills who cut joinery wood... 24. thats a big area, can you be more specific? what's the nearest town or village. i'll put this on facebook if you want to see who would be interested in some branches as i hate to see good wood go to waste... could you supply a picture or two of the trees.
  25. turners like those give us a bad name. try putting it on facebook. what's your location.
