  1. it may be best to cut the burrs in to blanks and cut what's left of the log into squares for legs. this is how a burr cut for a bowl blank should be cut.
  2. you don't have to concede, i could just sit on you:laugh1: and thankfully my 110kg is not fat, yet... to be fair i'm in the same boat, got more wood than i need but burr elm is one of my favorite timbers.
  3. peh, that's only an inch and a half on me, i got 10kg over you in weight. they're mine, get out'a my way boys:lol::lol:
  4. hopefully i'm bigger than the pair of you so i can muscle my way through to first in line... i'm 6'3" and 240lbs:lol::lol:
  5. very interested in those burrs, how big are they and where abouts are you?
  6. you could be a bit more specific, logs, boards or butts? i have slabs of it if you are interested.
  7. that was quick, it only appeared about 20 minutes before i put this thread up.
  8. i wouldn't bother with a moisture meter as you can tell if it's dry when it stops losing weight. i turn my skittle blanks and let their weight tell me if they are dry or not. also you can measure the block and get its volume to see how many cubic foot it is and work out what it should weigh for dry material. i do this to get a goal weight for my blanks and when they are near it i turn them into skittles, i realise this may be a bit loose for joinery terms but as it's only a workbench it could still be applied.
  9. just thought i'd put this up here. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VB-36-lathe-L-A-T-H-E-perfect-condition-/222014767958?hash=item33b11c8356:g:x6MAAOSwXshWsylu the same sort of thing has been listed 5-6 times over the past couple of months. these lathes are thousands so nobody lists them for one day only and starts the bidding so low. will these people never learn.
  10. why can this not be milled? makes a great durable timber.
  11. in my humble opinion there is only one answer here. all wood is good for turning. it all depends if the turner has the skill or like using that sort of timber, for example i hate monkey puzzle but it's great when used by the right person. the bowl certainly looks like field maple. as for the woods you have mentioned all are fine for turning but the only timber i can't comment on is the hazle as i've never had any to turn. how big is it as i may be interested in a sample
  12. with a species like cedar of lebanon there is a greatly reduced risk of radial splitting occurring but to really stave off losing your latest bit of work you can drill a 1" hole through the pith and this should give the ring a great chance of allowing shrinkage without splitting.
  13. again, danish oil will most likely be fine but if you want to use that cypress when dry you will need to leave it another 6 months at least. it won't be dry after only 3 months.
  14. i put oak shelves in an alcove in my house and have heavy old encyclopedias on them and don't think there are any problems with the books sticking. once the danish is nice and dry you shouldn't have any problems.
  15. are you feeling old clive? i needed to build a low one to hide it under the windows but there are two out back and a far few builders bags for storage.
  16. you can see one i built myself on page 8 of this thread. http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/woodcraft-forum/60100-all-my-woodwork-so-far.html not much to it really mate and you should be able to build yourself one for alot less than you could buy one for.
  17. i think this one is a hoax as over the last 6 months they seem to be listed fairly regularly at stupid cheap starting prices. there is no information with this listing. and i've seen that picture before.
  18. which hemlock is it? Mountain Hemlock | The Wood Database - Lumber Identification (Softwoods) Eastern Hemlock | The Wood Database - Lumber Identification (Softwoods) Western Hemlock | The Wood Database - Lumber Identification (Softwoods)
  19. it's been used in joinery for long enough and i'm sure it mills quite well.
  20. i like the fact that once outside she say there are no pollutants coming out of the chimney? what about the CO2 then???
  21. well i like my odd species so i may be interested. please add as many pics as you can along with either sizes or something in each photo for reference like a coffee cup..
