  5. hi stuart. i can't give you an exact species as the family is soooo huge but i can tell you that it is from the eucalyptus genus. it's most likely a jarrah or coolibah burl and the resin veins you describe as coal are fairly common.
  6. they sound like macrocarpa if they are still sound... you'll know when you cut into it as it has a lovely smell.
  7. fair enough, i work from home so can do any day of the week.
  8. poplar is soft stuff so either it's not poplar or you have blunt chisels. using blunt tools can be a bit dangerous so sharpen everything first. when do you think you may be able to visit?
  9. when i was a kid my old man said it was called a castor oil plant... i bet i said, "daddy how do you get oil from plants???"
  10. do you mean monterey pine or monterey cypress? Radiata Pine | The Wood Database - Lumber Identification (Softwoods) Monterey Cypress | The Wood Database - Lumber Identification (Softwoods) if it is a pine then it makes excellent joinery timber but if it is a cypress then also mill it as it makes excellent timber for outdoor use as it's very resistant to decay.
  11. hey big beech, glad to hear you've finally taken the plunge. if you can make your way up to J7 of the M4 then i'm happy to help mate.
  12. at that age the power to weight ratio can change quite a bit in only a few years. i reckon i could have climbed lots of things with ease at 16 as i was only 5'9" and a skinny 10 stone. 5 years on i was 6'3" and 13 stone so climbing is more difficult, stronger i may have been but i was heavier. now at 33 i am still 6'3" but because of alot of physical work i am not fat but now weigh 17 1/2 stone.
  13. sad to hear that burt kwok has passed away at the age of 85. good actor i wonder how many more famous faces will be added to the list before the year is out.
  14. try getting in touch with james, i'm sure he still wants some. http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/general-chat/96888-oak-saw-logs-required.html
  15. not sure what it is worth but it's worth more than firewood that's for sure. as timber it makes great outdoor tables or pergolas. any pictures?
  16. get some pallet racking if you have room.
  17. yes i have some 5" square beams that are too spalted for their original use of skittles. they are a bit cracked but to be fair i need shot of them so i will take a low offer really. i think they are 7-8' long and there are about 7 lengths.
  18. here are two of the boards i have. .
  19. no you are not. it is a species of angiosperm which are hardwoods. it does not however mean that it is a very hard timber, don't forget that most of the softest species of timber fall into the angiosperm category.
  20. think that it is just a hawthorn mate. there are lots of trees that have different shaped leaves in the canopy compared to lower down.
  21. well it may not be exactly what you want but i have a few bits of natural edge mahogany at 1m wide if you are interested.
  22. yep, i'd say that it's one of the poplar species. poor quality firewood but makes great timber...
  23. yes, any common species of the maple family and beech are perfect for using as kitchen utensil material. i have used sycamore, canadian hard maple, beech and even ekki (for a pestle and mortar) and thinking about it i've also used muhuhu, jarrah and oak for pestle and mortars and chopping boards. i've not yet used laburnum or yew to make an item for food use (except a yew fruit bowl) and i don't think it should be recommended. in saying that, i'd do the same as james. if someone want's one made and they know the risks then i'd happily make it. i was going to offer the original poster my services as a joiner before muttley beat me too it.
  24. dummy bombs do need to be signed for and here is where the error occurred. on the news earlier it was stated that the person who signed for the bombs signed away for 14 when only 13 were there. makes sense for a dummy to be marked as such but bomb makers could copy this could they not?
  25. what exactly do you mean by this?
