  2. welcome to the forum mate. i'm sure you will find all the info from very helpful chaps on here. i turn the wood that tree surgeons produce so that it's not all turned into firewood.
  3. no but if it's coming down i've got dibs on it..... it's mine, it's mine, it's mine, it's mine, it's mine, it's mine, it's mine, it's mine, no one else gets it... it's mine... can i have it please jon?
  4. nepia taxis strikes again. i'm interested pepperpot..
  5. yesterday i snapped the neckband spring for my peltorIII H540B ear defenders so i swapped it with set which had worn out plastic to seal against the skin. this left me with two perfectly good ear cups and foam so i decided to stuff the extra foam inside the good set. they are rated at snr35 anyway. i wonder what they are now??? the noise i now hear is vastly quieter than it was before but the only drawback with this is that my head now gets very hot very quickly. is it a bad idea to put two foam bit where there is only meant to be one?
  6. i'm looking for future stock of sycamore for my skittles business. i need milled squares of un-spalted sycamore from trees over 2' diameter. this does not have to be prime white timber but it does need to be good hard wood. harder maple species like canadian maple and norway maple (if any good sized ones grow in this country) are also ok to use. i'm looking for this to be milled in the coming winter for use in 2018. squares must be milled to 5 3/8" to allow for shrinkage. if anyone can help then please send an email to my website. thanks in advance Steve
  7. just a shout for any decent sized robinia being felled around the country. i'm interested in getting it milled. obviously if there is any close to maidenhead then that would be great. does anyone have any already milled?
  8. reddwood should belt sand quite easily so before buying one of the burrs i'd give it a crack with a coarse grit belt first. be nice to see some pics when finished...

  14. hi stuart. i can't give you an exact species as the family is soooo huge but i can tell you that it is from the eucalyptus genus. it's most likely a jarrah or coolibah burl and the resin veins you describe as coal are fairly common.
  15. they sound like macrocarpa if they are still sound... you'll know when you cut into it as it has a lovely smell.
  16. fair enough, i work from home so can do any day of the week.
  17. poplar is soft stuff so either it's not poplar or you have blunt chisels. using blunt tools can be a bit dangerous so sharpen everything first. when do you think you may be able to visit?
  18. when i was a kid my old man said it was called a castor oil plant... i bet i said, "daddy how do you get oil from plants???"
  19. do you mean monterey pine or monterey cypress? Radiata Pine | The Wood Database - Lumber Identification (Softwoods) Monterey Cypress | The Wood Database - Lumber Identification (Softwoods) if it is a pine then it makes excellent joinery timber but if it is a cypress then also mill it as it makes excellent timber for outdoor use as it's very resistant to decay.
  20. hey big beech, glad to hear you've finally taken the plunge. if you can make your way up to J7 of the M4 then i'm happy to help mate.
  21. at that age the power to weight ratio can change quite a bit in only a few years. i reckon i could have climbed lots of things with ease at 16 as i was only 5'9" and a skinny 10 stone. 5 years on i was 6'3" and 13 stone so climbing is more difficult, stronger i may have been but i was heavier. now at 33 i am still 6'3" but because of alot of physical work i am not fat but now weigh 17 1/2 stone.
  22. sad to hear that burt kwok has passed away at the age of 85. good actor i wonder how many more famous faces will be added to the list before the year is out.

  24. not sure what it is worth but it's worth more than firewood that's for sure. as timber it makes great outdoor tables or pergolas. any pictures?
