  1. congratulations mate. are you enjoying the sleepless nights? any chance you can chuck a 5"x5" length from an off cut (if you have one) in there too just to see how it handles being kilned. it can always go on the fire afterwards
  2. laburnum can be greatly varied in colour and usually darkens anyway. had a block that was dark but once cut up it was pale blonde in colour but one bowl blank is dark brown all the way through.
  3. they are dying out in general but i don't think wood turning belongs on that list. there are loads of us if you look around a bit. pole lathe turning i admit only 4-5 people in the country may be doing this.
  4. if it's the right size i'm happy to pay for a pallet. what sort of diameter is it?
  5. get some snaps up when you can mate as i'll happily pay for a pallet if there is enough.
  6. i see some flashin.... i hope it's as good as last night...
  7. just another store for the winter fuel. it's only 2' high but 10' long as it had to fit under that sill on the edge of the conservatory.
  8. i wont be turned in to lots of nice bowls unfortunately (well one or two bits will) but turned in to these skittles. although its not quite as good as boxwood it's a good substitute and that's what i'm after.
  9. is anyone able to bring this to maidenhead??? TIMBER: LABURNUM TREE see details | eBay
  10. hi all, i'm on the lookout for decent bits of laburnum to use for making very small skittles. the stems need to be 6-8" as i intend to quarter them and make 4 pins from each length. if anyone has any trees coming down in berkshire then i will happily take delivery of the large bits. length is not a factor as each skittle ends up 6" tall but i need the width so it can be split as described.
  11. that would be great to see those two saw go against each other...
  12. could have had plenty like that here too. there was a strike about every 10 seconds for half a hour. as i said a few posts ago, i am a tenpin bowler and throw it down there really fast and boom. i sometimes get called the thunder bolt because of the speed and the sound it makes but i can not hold a patch to the show mother nature has just given us, some really bright lightning and very loud thunder. wooooooweeee. that was a goodun. it has been so bright in the garden i can pick out more detail than you see in the daytime. light, dark, light, dark, light, dark, light, dark. man my iris muscles are worn out...
  13. getting treated to one hell of an electrical storm at the moment. not going to watch it that much because last time i did that i managed to be looking in the exact direction that one hit a mile or two away and had a huge fork of lightning imprinted on my retina for a good 5 minutes and started to think it was permanent.
  14. i am working in my workshop but ii may as well be outside. i've got to finish tidying it up. fans don't make much difference either. on top of that i had to go bowling tonight as it was the last night of the season but on the plus side i did end up bowling a 258 and got high game of the season.
  15. weather report earlier said 32 deg for tomorrow. i cant handle that...
  16. i live in maidenhead but am not sure what a climbing lid is, put up a pic or a link of what you want and i'll try to think of a place that may sell them.
  17. no prob's fella...
  18. try muttley, he's in winslow i think http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/members/muttley9050.html
  19. it'll look great once finished. what are your plans for it's final look? gloss or matt? would love some pics of the squares once cut.
  20. for the larger bowls yes i do that. turn down to 1"-1 1/4" thick then seal most of the endgrain some don't need it in my opinion and if they are small enough too they are less likely to split.
  21. useful for square blanks but can take years to fully season. roughing a blank out drastically reduces the amount of time it takes to do this. i turned a cherry urn 6" in diameter and took out the middle and it has take only 4 months to dry. if i had done it the end sealing way it would have taken years. if time is on my side i do use wax on square bowl blanks.
  22. gobbypunk too. i think he's in that part of the country. http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/members/gobbypunk.html
  23. true... it's just the planer and the saw i'm after really but as no machinery of that size and power is under 415v i would need the gen too if i want to run them as i'm on 240v.
