  1. i notice he says that price will be plus vat when the auction ends. hope he realises that you are not allowed to add vat to the auction price...
  2. got my dads old set of drapers (possibly granddads) that have a metal tin type box and they are the dogs wotsits. see if you can find an old set on ebay cause if they've lasted this long they'll out last you...
  3. great looking stuff there mate. nice to see some lumber from a bit that most would log up... fab looking grain too. are they 3" boards?
  4. that would usually be cut with as much wood touching the ground as possible giving you a set of curved planks which would be great for things like garden benches and BBQ tables.
  5. i considered saying it may be lichen but as there was no picture i did not comment. i'm getting better at this tree malarky... as everyone else says mate, enjoy your tree.
  6. not an expert on these but i believe the lower branches brown die and fall of as the tree gets taller and older. the cones sound like they have just shed their seeds and drop off anyway but as you say they are full of seeds could have been got at by a bird. as i say i'm no expert so i may be completely wrong but i don't think there is anything badly wrong with the tree itself.
  7. interested in the beech 6x6. is there any 5x5??? what sort of condition is it in as i need unsplit beams for skittle production.
  8. i think alec has one so ask him. he's agg221 http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/members/agg221.html
  9. not going to enter but i think a rope called the snapper would be a great laugh. unless it did snap on you???
  10. is that a (was that) a beautiful old black pine?
  11. i managed to get hold of 4 advertising banners that you put on farm trailers you can see from the motorway. things like sky and nescafe on them and that material is so sturdy and thick. i expect to have them many years down the line. not sure exactly what it's classed as but i recommend it.
  12. here we go,
  13. finally got round to finishing some of that field maple alun cut all that time ago and i'll post a picture shortly.
  14. excellent work there mate. that sort of construction is time consuming and that is why they cost so much to buy but as you say you now know the construction so should be able to make it alot quicker next time. take those commissions and just charge materials and the time it takes you. you should make money that way.
  15. doing something like that is far from a waste of wood in my opinion as you get multiple usage of what was merely to be a few lumps of fire wood. one lamp shade, one load of chips for animal bedding, one load of used animal bedding to be either composted or burnt as fuel. why can we not all do this and get the most out of what nature gives us.
  16. you must do one unpainted and perhaps burn it black with a few brush stroke just to paint in eyes and teeth. excellent work by the way...
  17. yep. beech it is.
  18. would be interested to know the wood block printer as i can supply the blocks.
  19. that's paul hinds site in america. very knowledgeable fella. he has about thirty pages where there are some of my bowls. look amongst the bowls at the bottom of each page if you are interested. the bowls by steve earis are mine. wenge, honduran rosewood ,laburnum, pau santo, zebrawood, yew, ziricote, indian rosewood, padauk, beech, cocobolo and olivewood to name a few...
  20. wish i could mate but i'm a maker not a miller. i just wish that good wood was not always split for the fire or chipped for biomass, such a waste...
  21. looks like monkey puzzle.
  22. like tulip wood poplar makes decent joinery wood and i can't understand why we import all the american yellow poplar (tulip tree) when we have a perfectly good timber to use over here. very good for carcasing or kitchen doors or anywhere that need paint applied to it like skirting and architrave. burns ok in my opinion
  23. as a joiner and crafstsman myself i often find it hard to set a price but i'd tell your dad to put about £1000 on the top one and £500 for the starburst.
  24. this has already become an epidemic...
  25. i thought that some trees are so ancient that they end up as really wide trunks that break apart and eventually start again putting up new trunk describing the outer ring of the original tree. never heard of lime doing that though.
