  1. Hi Matt Richard next door can do it fairly well. Couldn't track down our water pipe in the field and he marked it out within a few feet. Tried it myself under his direction and got some results but not so accurate. Not the foggiest how it works but very handy.
  2. All that for 169k euros! Looks lovely
  3. Sure Devon is not as cold as Scotland but up here on the moors it's not as warm as the likes of Exeter either. On the other hand they can build homes in Finland that don't need any heating at all! Can you fit internal insulation? It's how we insulated our barn. Thought your Mrs was an architect doing eco buildings but maybe I have got that wrong?
  4. 20 kWh wood burner and 1200 litres of oil Fit some insulation man. Our 8 kWh wood burner will heat our whole house with ease and keep thinking of getting a smaller one as we cant open it up without overheating the place. 200 year old barn with 120 m2 of flooring and some of it double hight.
  5. Great one chaps. All ordered and we will see how well it works.
  6. Local engineering firm recommended them so thought it worth a try. Got some bearings that cant get greases at present and would need to drill out the pins to change them so thought this worth a try.
  7. Getting the right term is clearly the key. Tried various things but didn't get any result. Thanks
  8. I bet they do but don't let up on them until it's sorted. I had problems with a new Isuzu and foolishly let the dealer fob me off for far too long which cost me a bob or two.
  9. About £15 a year. Peeved as it used to be free
  10. Just came across these and if they work as well as described would be a godsend. Snag is they don't appear to available in the UK well not for sensible money anyway. IPA Grease Fitting Cleaner, Model# 7862H | Hoses, Valves Fittings| Northern Tool + Equipment Anyone know where I might get one or something similar?
  11. Olight wave. Had one for few years now. Good light and lightweight on the head with USB rechargeable battery. The wave function is unnecessary and run time on full power is relatively short.
  12. I think not but but we were discussing the big microwave kiln that was in the film Kickass and wondering if they really exist if they would be any good for drying logs The sample is up to 2.8% today but presume rate of gain will slow as it gets closer to equilibrium.
  13. Go to the Facebook page and there loads and loads of very unhappy owners https://www.facebook.com/groups/505526562959686/?fref=nf The state that some of them are in is proper scary.
  14. Sure it will take longer than the drying. Amazed how quick you can oven dry a log. Just a few hours and it was done.
  15. 20 year old Protimeter. It came with a calibration test and adjustment tables for the various species. Never had cause to doubt it.
  16. Yes for perfection you are right Steve but this is just a bit of fun really. I might do some ash and oak as well as this would cover the majority of what I see going for firewood.
  17. We often discus the merits of kiln dried logs and how dry they are when it comes to using them. Wood is hygroscopic so will end up in equilibrium with the environment they get stored in. Kiln dried logs can be very dry but how quickly will they take up moisture again when they are put in a damp environment like an outside log shed? I have oven dried a beech log until it loses no more weight so should now be at 0% moisture. I took a moisture meter reading before drying to partly test the accuracy of my meter. It read 20% on one end and 17% on the other. This log is left over from last season so has had two years drying. Starting weight 655 grams Dry weight 543 grams So the meter was close with the log being 20.6% before oven drying. It's now going into a covered log shed to see how quickly it takes on water again.
  18. Great stuff thanks Lined the fire box of our cast iron stove with insulated sheet to up the temperatures. Appears to work a treat with much cleaner burning now.
  19. Ah never thought of it like that Is that right just 2% in it?
  20. Could probably have go at that. Only way I can see to do it accurately would be to oven dry a sample to 0% and the measure it's weight gain over the coming weeks sitting in the log shed
  21. Thanks Steve Might check out Youtube for those with a death wish
  22. I looked into this for charcoal retorts. From reading around some bricks are fire proof due to the baking process. Think the term used to describe them was "smooth creams" Still not built the retort so can't comment on if they were fireproof though.
  23. How different are Rocket mass heaters to masonry stoves? Always fancied building a masonry stove but the rocket mass heaters always seem a bit risky for home use.
